Avoid Mahkota. Used to be Singaporean favourite but rooms are run down and old. Holiday Inn is much much better for the same price.

If budget Ok, of course Holiday Inn is much much better. I do not think the price is the same for both. Different category.

My opinion on the hotels in melaka
1. Equitorial hotel, near to historical places like A famosa, shopping center like Dataran Pahlawan and mahkota parade. I think equitorial hotel is the best location where you can shop, hang out with Pub, sight seeing
2. Holiday Inn & Mahkota - near to Mahkota shopping center which is just opposite..
3. City baview - Nothing interesting around there

regarding coach tickets, is it cheaper to buy return ticket from Malacca itself, rather than buy from Sg?

Anyone taken grassland coach before from Beach Road? Where exactly is the stop and pick-up point in Malacca? Trying to decide a hotel nearby.

Grassland just state that the bus stop at Jalan Sri Lanang but I checked the map and it is a bloody long stretch of road.

yes, defintely cheaper to get from Malacca for return ticket, it cost only RM22++. However, sometime is difficult to get the ticket and you need to buy the return ticket early

Normally those famous buses to Malacca is Delima Express, 707 Express, Singapore - Malacca Express. All these buses will stop at the Melaka Sentral bus station

You need to consider the service stop in Singapore. You do not wish to alight in Jurong Point at 11pm when your home is in Pasir Ris.

You can buy the return ticket from the bus counter @ Malacca Sentral bus station in RM. Bro buswhiz already listed the famous bus companies.

Weekday ticket is easy to buy, buy the return ticket immediately aft you alight the bus. Weekend ticket especially Sunday return ticket normally hv to buy few weeks in advance.

Bus departs almost hourly basis and take approximately 4 hours (depends the traffic condition and stopover time during the journey) to reach here.

Delima Express stops at City Plaza, nearest MRT is Paya Lebar
707 express stops at Bugis
Singapore - Malacca stops at kallang bahru, nearest mrt Lavendar mrt

share my experience stay at holiday-inn and mahkota hotel on last weekend.
holiday-iin:
- clean (8/10)
room carpet is as clean as new.
- neat (8/10)
- everything in order (8/10)
- everything in work condition (7/10)

Mahkota:
- clean (5/10)
bathtub rusty everywhere
dust everywhere in furniture/ wardrobe
- neat (7/10)
- everything in order (5/10)
every tap water difficult to open/ close, something like need strength to open and close.
window difficult to open/ close
aircon can not be control(temp and fan speed)
lift light very dim for 2 night
room carpet have whole almost in everywhere and not only in the corner.

- everything in work condition (4/10)
3 ch blur, 7 ch can not see at all tv
toilet bowl can not flush
door bell not work, need to knock the door

my personal opinion who have child's 4 and 6 year old:
traveling with children below 12 is not recommend stay at Mahkota hotel.
traveling without children below 12 is not bad to stay at Mahkota hotel as:
- it have alot of activities: tennis, table tennis, bicycle rent, mini golf, balcony for sea view(which i love very much to seat (use dinign table chair :( ) to enjoy the sea view, etc
feeling more secure about car park at holiday-iin then mahkota
feeling more secure about room safety at holiday-iin then mahkota
- it is very easy to "hop" into another room in same level because of the balcony at mahkota

I was staying in equatorial last week .. Most convenient IMHO ... Go everywhere by foot ... Walked to jonker takes 10 to 15 mins ...
Palhawan is just a stones' throw away ...

But having stayed at holiday inn 2 years ago I must say that holiday inn has nicer rooms ...but location a further 10 mins away to jonker street ...

I have not try equatorial, as I prefer hotel near sea (mahkota or holiday-iin)
I think it take 20-25 mins from holiday-iin to jonker street.
because at least you need cross 2 wide road (1 to mahkota shoping mall, 1 to dataran palawan) and 1 small road (to the river near the water fountain).

btw all room in equatorial also have balcony right?

Room price for Holiday Inn and Mahkota?

from my last weekend trip:
holiday-inn 338rm++ (town view) without b'fast for 2 adult.(2 bed)
mahkota hotel 368rm nett (sea/ town view) with b'fast for 4 adult. (4 bed)

i can say b'fast is not important, as you can walk 8-10 mins from each hotel, then you can get 3-4rm nice noodle/ rice :)
