Questions about Overclocking

I would like to start off by saying i am completel,entirely new to this and that i am an IT idiot
So before i start overclocking anything, are there any programmes/systems that i have to download so that i can keep track of the cpu temp/voltage fan speed etc? Or are they all already available somewhere in Windows 10

This is what i imagine overclocking CPU to be
" Base clock speed 3.2hz, max turbo core speed 3.6ghz. Does this means that under load it can automatically rise to 3.6ghz ( and this isnt considered overclocking )
So in order to overclock this CPU i would manually set the Com Frequency to a desired amount which in this case lets use 3.8ghz as an example. Following that. i would set the core voltage to 1.3v.
Is this the way overclocking is done? or should i just change the CPU Frequency and leave voltage on auto?

If the overclocking were to fail due to CV being to low/high would there be any permanent damage to the computer? or would it just show a prompt saying OC failed and direct me back to bio so i can tweak the settings

Lastly does anyone know the base CPU voltage of a Ryzen 1600? cant seem to find in the specs of the official website.

Boost is overclocking within set limits on it's own. Reasonable to expect it will OC higher than boost clock since usually boost clocks are within stock cpu core voltage.

Of course, boost won't be as dramatic on a 65W TDP processor for all six cores 3.4 or 3.5 would be more reasonable. Actually, boost on intel and AMD sides will only hit that high with a very low thread count.

And yes overclocking can be set in UEFI OR using ryzen master by setting the frequency (in the case of ryzen master it shows you target frequency)/multiplier.

If you want to keep track of voltage and temps, use HWMonitor.

If voltage is way way too high then yes, you will cause permanent damage. As long as you stay below 1.4v for long term you are all fine.

And if you fail OCs it will simply power cycle and then run on UEFI defaults and then prompt you saying OC failed

There is no "base voltage" all cpus have different voltages from the factory depending on leakage.

Stuff to prepare:
1. Heart
2. Balls
3. HWMonitor (for monitoring temps, fans speed, clock speed)
4. Cinebench R15 (same workload as rendering. Benchmark for cpu performance.)
5. Aida64 (stress test for cpu)
6. Prime95 (stress + maximizing heat output for cpu to test max possible cpu temp)
7. Unigine Superposition (benchmark for gpu, simulate gaming load)

Intel Turbo Boost/AMD Precision Boost, is built in minor overclocking for 1 or 2 cores only based on temperature. If temps is okay, it will keep boosted. If temp hit certain threshold, it will lower/stop boosting and run at base speed. This is to boost speed for low cpu usage applications like Microsoft words, launching a browser, and other low usage applications. Base speed is the speed all 6 cores is running, 3.2ghz out of the box for R5 1600.

The moment you tweak cpu frequency or voltage, all the built in features will be disabled and all cores will run at the speed you set unless you otherwise specified with different oc state. When you key on 3.6ghz core clock frequency, all 6 cores will running at this speed, effectively making 3.6ghz your base clock, but you won't have any boost or further minor overclocking as those features are hard coded to be disabled when you do overclocking.

Hope this explain the idea of overclocking.

You won't damage your cpu by overclocking as long as within 1.4V with adequate cooling. AMD warranty cover up to 1.45V. Above that, your warranty is void. With that said, I mentioned before stock cooler cannot handle too much heat also. Which is why I ask you to stay within 1.3V and see how high of the frequency you can go. If your cooling potential permits, say with high end cooler or liquid cooling, then you can hit higher voltage to hit higher frequency.

If oc fail, system will boot loop 5 times or so, then tell you oc fail and setup again. Going into bios from there, your settings will be reset and you have to key in your oc settings again. Your system won't fry unless you hit very very high voltage count.

Oh so boost is actually the opposite of what i thought it would be. It actually increases the com frequency when it is under less lpad as opposed to more.

Does the UEFI/ryzen master refer to the mobo bios? Or is that something that have to be downloaded

So in most scenarios OC failure wouldnt lead to the damaging of any pc parts?

But what if the starting voltage for the pc is very high is it possible to get a 1:1 exchange or is that depedent on the store

Wow thats actually alot of applications needed :o is stress test an app that forces ur cpu to work under very high load so that you can see the cpu temp,voltage and so on under those conditions?

What about MSI command centre that i seen some youtubers have access too, it seems to show cpu frequency, voltage and all that jazz.

The whole functionality of the boost seems pretty contradictory to me, i would want it to be boosted when the load is high as opposed to low so as to maintain a certain lvl of stability haha.

When you say that all other features will be offed how is it that some ppl solely change the cpu frequency and leave the rest of the features like ( voltage) on auto but still get it to work. Since if the voltage wasnt manually changed it would have to be running on the base voltage? Or are auto settings still active.

Is the warranty coverage same for ram voltage? Actually is it even considered OC-ing for ram when u are just making it run at the advertised speed for said ram . Like 3000mhz for a 3000mhz ram lol

Buy a asus z board and let it auto oc for you, fuss free idiot proof method, at least for intel chip.

Those stress tests are synthetic work load. It's forces your cpu to work so you can know whether your oc stable or not.

I don't use the command center or Ryzen master. I do the tweaking from BIOS coz those software have higher chance to be bugged out or conflict with other tweaking softwares. You can still use them nonetheless, I'm just saying coz it's not my preference.

You can leave voltage on auto. Not all settings are manual. But auto voltage is higher than manual usually, resulting higher heat output. That's why I advise you to set a certain voltage before tweaking frequency to control the heat output.

RAM oc is covered as long as it is within the stated xmp profile the manufacturer provided.

-updated specs-

Cpu OC 3.75mhz 1.28v
Aida64 15mins max temp 83c, avg at 75c

Ram 2.8mhz, 1.35v

Why are my temps so high at a pretty low oc =/ when cpu was ran at 1.3v it had the same max temp n average temp. Lowering the voltage by 0.25 made no differenceeee

3.75 looks good ah. You want, can try 3.8 on 1.3V. For me the Temps does goes up. So I stay at 1.275. If yours yield the same temps, push further. Temps looks okay and just nice. Avg 75 and max 83 is good numbers.

Those temp arent considered high? The aid64stres test just failed 10mins in saying hardware failure detected. Is that a very serious issue ?

*edit there is a temperatuee column under amd ryzen 5 1600 is that the temperature of my cpu or is the one above under my mobo at the temper classifciation saying cpu my cpu temp? *

What do i tell them? I was just running a stress test? Uh idk what heat sink? OMG NOW MY COM JUST TURNED OFF DURING THE STRESS TEST WHAT DO I DO

The deaktop is still running but my monitor not receving any signal. Do i force shutdown or what

Never, EVER, tell a shop/distro that you overclocked. That voids warranty.

For TS, just turn off the computer, and reset BIOS. Let it rest for a while to cool off, and then check components. Shouldn't be a issue, aida64 most likely prompted an unstable OC. Tweak ur settings and try it out again

Stop stress testing. Go into BIOS and reset to default. (no overclock)

How are you cooling your cpu

For TS, just turn off the computer, and reset BIOS. Let it rest for a while to cool off, and then check components. Shouldn't be a issue, aida64 most likely prompted an unstable OC. Tweak ur settings and try it out again

I turned it off and when i turned it on again the monitor is not getting any signal from the desktop. It says no dvi signal or something. Why is this happening omg
