found a multi storey car park near my home with this extension which no bikes will park one (cos its open air). What you guys think? good/ample space for drifting?

Hi, I'm a RC noob going to get my first kit. I'm most like to get the Nismo Coppermix Silvia (TT-01D) Drift Spec TT-01D. I was quoted $230 at Auntie Winnie's shop. I will not be racing the car, just playing in the car park.

- I was recommended the digital controller by Futaba for $150. Is this a good deal?
- what size of battery and what charger makes sense for a beginner?
- does the car shell require cutting and drilling? How much does a ready made shell cost?
- when spray painting the car, should the inside or outside be painted?
- any special tools to buy when getting the kit besides having a couple screwdrivers?

Heya!

- Do you know what is the model of the Futaba controller? E.g. 2PL etc?

- For the TT01, the 7.2V battery pack is used. If you want longer run times, go with a 3700mAh or higher rated battery pack. The blue "Intellect" packs are quite good, if they're unavailable, can go with the GP ones. As for the charger, depends on your budget. If you can, then get one that has peak detect with charge+discharge cycles. But chargers like those will cost around $150. Normal ones start from $15 iirc.

- The car shell requires cutting. Buy a dedicated curved "body/Lexan" scissors. Tamiya makes good ones. As for making holes in the car, get a body reamer instead. Should be around $10-15 if I'm not wrong. Not sure how much a ready-made shell costs though..

- The polycarbonate car body should be sprayed from the inside. :D Make sure you don't remove the film on the outer surface of the car because that's to prevent overspray from marring the nice glossy look when you finish the job. :D

- Don't really need any special tools for the kit. But get a penknife/NT cutter to trim the excess flash from the plastic parts when you remove them from the parts tree.

Tips for car body prepping:

1) Wash the interior of the car body with soap and let dry before painting. That'll get rid of any oil inside and help the paint stick better.

2) Decide what paint scheme you want, then trace/draw the design on the outside of the car body.

3) Outline the car windows so that it helps you see where to align the window masks. Window masks are to be placed on the inside of the car body, since you're spraying from the inside.

4) Outline the edges and wheelarcs of the car so that you can see where you want to cut.

5) Spray thin coats at a time and let it dry. Dark colours should be sprayed first.

Hope this helps! :D

TheoDR, thanks for your very comprehensive reply. I have some questions after reading your post.

- I think the Futaba controller that Winnie recommended is the 2PL. However, it is really necessary to get a digital one if I'm not going racing?

- The blue "intellect" battery pack, what brand is it? Does Winnie carry those? I've been reading quite often that the batteries purchased do not operate at the expected length of time.

- I think I'll probably start with the entry level charger. Any brand or model to recommend?

- Are the window masks provided?

- What should be used to make outlines of the wheel arcs and edges on the body shell?

- It looks like the extra tools required are:
- curved scissors
- body reamer
- hobby knife
- masking tape
- Is there anything else I'm missing?

- For a car like the Nismo Coppermix Silvia, can I get by with just silver spray paint? How many coats is recommended? Should the windows be painted or left transparent?

Most welcome! :D

The Futaba 2PL is not a true digital controller, but it will save you money in the long run as it has 10 car memory, especially if you're not going to stop at just one car.

10 car memory works by saving settings for 10 different cars. For e.g. if you want to control Car A, just switch the Car A's (servo) settings, for Car B, just change to Car B settings. You won't have to adjust the settings everytime you switch between cars.

I think the blue "Intellect" pack's brand is just Intellect. Will have to check and get back to you on that one. Meanwhile, can try Googling to see how it looks like. :D

How long the batteries last will depend on what kind of motor you're using. If you're using the stock silvercan motor that comes with the kit, your batt will last for 30min or more. But if you're using a powerful motor, your batteries may just last 10 min or less.

For chargers, maybe try asking the buddies here cus I haven't been updating myself with brands etc :p

I think window masks are provided, especially with Tamiya and HPI bodes. Iirc, the Coppermix Silvia body gives you the option of using window stickers (non transparent) or masking the body for transparent windows.

You can use one of those Pilot marker pens to outline the body (on the outside). Personally, I like the black double-tipped one a lot. Has fine and Medium tips on each end.

I don't think you're missing anything else from the list. One can of spray paint is too light a coat (for me), so I usually go with 2 cans. :D Make sure you use polycarbonate paints for your car body. If you're unsure if you've got the correct type, ask Winnie if its the correct one.

Feel free to ask if you've anymore questions =D

TheoDR, does it mean that if I only intend to have 1 car, I do not need a 2PL? Coz the 2PL is $150 and the analogue one is $100 (also Futaba). No point breaking the bank if it's just to store settings.
