Prevent windows update by setting the wifi as metered connection. Then it won't download the update.

Shouldn't have disabled windows update if your system is gonna be connected to the Internet.

try macOS, its wonderful
first there is an innocent prompt that tells you, there is an update available
you click OK then all of a sudden your computer reboots and macOS starts updating

so the next time you see that innocent prompt, you are smarter and you click, not ok
every single time you boot up your pc, that innocent prompt comes up. until one day when you are in the middle of something important, you see the prompt and click OK to get it to go away...

If you have a project, it is always best and must to have a backup. This is basic common sense especially if it is something important. Always back up so that even if your OS is down, at least you still have 80-90% of your project. If you do not have a backup and update screw you up, you are equally at fault same as the update.

1) there are many ways to stop window update.
2) always backup your project.
3) try other OS like linux or macOS.

Kind of weird blaming windows when its so simple to just backup project. All important work is either backed up on One drive or Google drive. These drives are synced to my windows folders so its not even a manual process.

I also don't get people claiming not updating windows and OS and being somewhat proud about it. These updates contain major security patches and vulnerability fixes. We use our computers for banking, private emails, logins to govt tax sites. Your PC may be part of someone's botnet if you are this lax about it. Cyber security should be taken seriously in my opinion.

Lol, u again

How does it feel to be limited to cherry-picking only less than 5% of available hardware in the market just for the sake of stress-free computing in Linux?

Like being able to use only Intel and AMD GPUs on Linux?
Or being able to use only Intel or Qualcomm WiFi cards in Linux?
Or being able to use only expensive HP printers in Linux?

Or on the software side: knowing that the version of Firefox or Chrome will never be updated for three years because every software change breaks something in Linux (Fact: Chrome broke itself on Red Hat after an update because Red Hat uses ancient runtime libraries. So Red Hat users had to settle for an outdated version of Chrome for at least five years. Can you stand using such an old version of Chrome when you can't even stand using Internet Explorer 11 today?)?

Or having to build a new kernel version for new drivers because stable distributions never backport driver updates to their old kernel for the entire life of the three or five year release?

Or not having a Google Drive or Microsoft Onedrive software client for Linux, which everybody on Windows takes for granted?

You people have been spoilt by Windows' massive hardware vendor and software base and still want to complain.

There are direct solutions to your problem:

What if update results in data loss: If you are worried, backup first.
Hibernate: Less relevant with SSD.

You seem to have update phobia.

Those who updated to 1903, you will notice any further updates you have to manually click "Download and install". If no action from you, nothing will be update.

Disable Windows up from services.msc

I face quite a similar issue. I have an old laptop used almost purely for printing purposes. Switched on maybe one or twice a month. Each time switch on, it is always updating and randering the laptop useless

I haven't been able to get my system and monitor to sleep on it's own ever since the 1903 update. However it works if I manually trigger it to sleep.

Always do backup of your important projects or presentation. Don't let window backup make a mess of your work. Nothing is perfect especially windows. It is now stable. Life to go on as window is the only OS common people using especially at home.

I'll usually backup current ver system image to an ext hdd then update...so anything wrong, I simply restore the backup without any fuss.

This is the actual and correct way. For me is 1 copy in HD and 1 copy in ext HD. Any further backup of the system image, 1 copy will be in ext HD. Kiasi but at least is safer.
