Just returned from Taiwan with my boyfriend and his old parents. Would like to share my experience with a driver I engaged. This is my second visit and third driver i have engaged so far.
Day 1 : Hualien花蓮 (Taroko National Park->黃金瀑布-> 陰陽海-> 十三層遺址-> 七星潭海邊-> Seafood Dinner) Price: NT 6000 (Departs at 6am, reached hotel about 9pm)
Day 2 : Shifen -> Jiufen -> Jinguashi -> Keelung Night Market -> Leechi Price: NT 3200 (9am to 6pm, 300NT for additional hour after 6pm)
Some of my personal encounters;
1. He is very meticulous in bringing us only to places that is easily accessible (less sloppy and stairs) for the parents. This gave me a sense of security to travel around with a peace of mind because he is always there to help keep a look out for the parents.
2. We are lazy people who seldom took photos during travelling esp when it is crowded. However, He offered to help us take photos. He helped us took more than 800 over pictures during the 2 days we engaged him. He even recommend us "secret" places such as the tunnel seen in the anime "Spirited Away" located at Jiufen.
3. For the previous drivers which I engaged, they will bring us to the destinations and stay put in the taxi and you shop yourself. However, he will shop/walk together with you and help to carry the things bought back to the car while we continue shopping. I really loved this experience.
4. Highly recommend the seafood restaurant he bought us to at Hualien. We ate abalones (one each), cockles, fish, crabs, vegetables and beer for about SGD 80. The shop owner treated us free sashimi. Everything is so fresh and delicious!
5. During my trip to Jiufen, i bought some Raspberry concentrate and he helps to bargained with shop owners that i got one extra bottles for free. With him around, we get to tried my food without feeling pressured by the shop owners to buy anything. He also hint to me stay away from some shops when he find the pricing too expensive.
6. He is a driver with integrity. I requested the destinations to visit for Day 2 and told him that we do not wish to visit Yeliu. In order not to short-change us, he introduces other places along the way and it's up to us to decide whether to go or not.
He is more than a driver. He is also a tour guide, photographer and most importantly, one who goes extra mile to ensure your trip is a pleasant and enjoyable one. During our first day, I spotted the cartoon character "Luffy" on this car and mentioned in passing that "Luffy" is my boyfriend's favourite character. Nearing the end of our trip, he surprised us by giving us a "Luffy" designed Sky Lantern as gift.
He mentioned that he provides assistance in booking minsu and also provide trips to Taichung which i personally have not tried it out. You can also visit his facebook page to view the pictures of the places to have a idea.
