To add on, the list below are just a couple of switches available now. Keyboard that uses these switches are still considered as mechanical keyboard.

Cherry MX switches, kailh switches, Razer, Logitech romer-G, Steelseries QS, Topre, Coolermaster novatouch, Matias, Gateron, just to name the popular one.

So if you look for a keyboard that uses the above switches, then yes, it's still consider as a mechanical kb.

This one u can google one... red is silent with no feedback, blue is the clicky one, brown is silent but with feedback.

Red and brown for gaming while blue abit geared for typing.

Just nice did some research on it right before i saw this post lol. This is my opinion though and the opinion of the peeps here may vary.

my personal opinion, go to SLS and try out the keyboards with the different keys. Switches from different brands have different feel. It all boils down to personal comfort and preference.

To chingpang, go to Xtreme solutions at sls. They have a variety of mech kb and you can test the switches.

Red/brown/blue/black/white/clear whatever Color of switches you need to go test it out for yourself. Shops like cybermind and xtreme solution have switches sample for you to try. Switches is a very sensitive items and everyone have their own prefer touch, so we can't tell you which switch to go for. You need to have a feel yourself to decide.

Hi, I'm looking at getting a new keyboard to be shared with my hubby, not sure what's the real difference between mechanical and membrane (lots of info like clicky feel and lighter taps) but can anyone help me with some more personal thoughts about them? Personally have been using membrane keyboard since the start and I'm only using it for work usage and some normal shortcuts for photoshop. However my hubby is the one who uses it for games so I wouldn't want to dive in to choose a keyboard without considering the benefits for him. He works till quite late and shops at SLS already closed so hard for him to actually go down to the shop to have a feel, weekends he will be at msia so SLS is really out for him.

Also saw some posts about cherry MX keys, what are these also?

Budget wise I'm looking at $60-$80, is this possible? I can extend my Budget if the functions are justified but would also like the option to choose thanks in advance for any help

For the start, i will explain in layman terms.

Cherry MX are the brands of mechanical switches. There are a few brands of mechanical switches found in market, some has their own design with different naming, it can be like Razer's Kailh switches, Topre switches etc. Just like how you call your keyboard "membrane".

In each brands, they have different type of textures when typing. So some brands have came out with many variations, some only a couple, or some only one. So we take the most popular ones, Cherry...

They have, blue, red, pink, brown, black, white, and i can't remember what other colors. But all of them have different feelings when you depress the keys. I will explain a few, the rest is up to you to find out.

So blue is the most noisiest keyboard, it has tactile feedback with the "Click" sound when you depress the keys. It is never wife friendly when your husband plays game, lol. It is also one of the lightest key to press.

Red is about the same as blue, but has no noisy click, it is also quite light together with blue.

Brown is a little different, brown is harder to press, but somewhere midway there is a tactile feeling, it does not have the click sound, but you can feel it.

Black is the hardest to press among all, there isn't any click, but its a lot harder than brown, with a slight tension for keys to be punching back up.

Another thing to take note is the type of plastic being used on a keycaps. It can come in ABS plastic and PBT plastic. Don't ask what is it stands for lol, cause the names for the plastic is so hard to pronounce. ABS are mostly found in most brands out there. They are like your membrane keyboard keycaps. It does fade away easily especially for people with sweaty palms or people whom eat and game at the same time. PBT has a much more matte surface. It does trap oil, but slightly lesser than ABS.

Next is the type of keyboard, full keyboard, TKL (Ten Key-less) or 60% keyboard. Usually people normally would opt for full keyboard or TKL version. TKL means the exclusion of the numpad. And 60% keyboard are with no F1-F12 and no num keys.

Lastly, LED or non LED. This is a personal preference. Mechanical keyboard has LED lightings or no LED lightings. If your husband plays in the dark then yes this may help him. Also for aesthetic purpose, that is really depending on him.

For the start, with that kind of budget you mentioned won't lead to any mechanical keyboards out there. A mechanical keyboard can cost anywhere between $99-$7XX.

For now, i would recommend you to get him the IKBC keyboard from Xtreme Solution at SLS IF YOU can head down to buy it yourself, there is a CNY promo going on for $119. Pretty good deal imho cause of the keycaps that comes with it is made of PBT materials. But if like you said, if you do not have the time to head down, lazada will only be your option, probably Ducky One.

IMO, I wouldn't go with Razer keyboards due to their poor build quality.
