Buying speaker isn't about brand but the sound.
If you put it that way, Creative to some like myself I won't recommend.
QC and reliability is questionable.

I myself also using Edifier but not that speaker.
PC speaker wise usually brands are Logitech, Edifier and etc.
Unless you want high end than KEF but may exceed your budget.
To a certain extent, the sound stage, SQ could be associated with the brand too.

My Creative Inspire T6300 just died today :'( used for 3 years, $100 for it.

Look thru the thread, saw Creative T40 being mentioned. Go Creative website, see a promo price of $149 for T40 after $100 discount, but then think of how long my creative speaker lasts... :/ Moreover, there are mentions here that Creative products don't last. My last 2 speakers were creative.

Contemplating if I should up my budget for speakers to $200 or maybe even $300.

Sad but true, as much I myself also support Creative in the past.
I have owned many series, Inspire, Gigaworks and Megaworks.
The speakers don't last very long, most had common issues such as remote control not working.

I would recommend Edifier R1280DBs than T40.

No space for Edifier R1280DBs :(
I'll need something small like what I have now

I'm using creative T40 series 2 speaker, suite limited table size, close sitting range and good value for money.
This 2 ways 3 speakers design sound faithful to original source with reasonable bass, good mids and highs, clear, hard hitting,
good depth, sound stage and sonic performance only if you able to setup well. Else you can take a look at this > Klipsch ProMedia 2.1.
