Recommended laptops for Poly?

Don't be cheapo and save for a lousy laptop.

Battery life, weight all that matters and outweight the cost. I mean seriously, just for a few dollar you want to carry something much heavier? Or something that has extremely short battery life.

Can share ur thoughts on why u believe Poly laptops are cheaper than outside? If u can provide specific examples comparatively speaking, would be most helpful.

1)Low Voltage CPU
2)Intel Graphics
Otherwise go ahead and get a WCG Laptop
If your course has particular requirement just follow.

just take a look at the IT fair brochures and compare.


Also, I would really really reccomend TS to pick the laptop of about 14" or smaller, and the lightest. (less than 1.8kg)
You'll be lugging your laptop around for the next 3 years or so, and weight and size is a real issue, that it becomes bothersome to carry it around.
You do not want to lose your laptop because it was too big and you left it at the toilet cubicle as you were doing your business and forgot to take it back.

If you really want to play games, then you might as well play on your desktop.


Just my 2cents, I've long graduated from poly and kinda thought back if I actually bought a lighter laptop instead back then, (but well, I could play games like counter strike and dota back then hahahaha)

For example the macbook pro that i buy is 200-400bucks cheaper than outside.

Also for Lenovo they have 4 years next day warranties. Not 3 years like outside. U just compare the price of the workstation with the 1 selling in shops. Confirm huge different.

Basically IT and Design student tends to demand huge processing power for their work .


Business course etc u use netbook also no problem . Since it's simple typing of documents etc. No big deal.

y400 is a multimedia/gaming laptop

t340u is an ultrabook. Not really for gaming but enough for videos and such

From my limited comparison....price wise almost the same....but like u say.....longer warranty and freebies. And oh yah...forgot to add....Poly limited choices.....for the same price or lower...can get similiar specs from other brands...like Asus, Toshiba, etc.......

IT fairs would not be a place I would use the price as benchmark......only the old models may be of value as retailers try to get rid of them at the fairs.

Yeah, it would be great if laptops is light and powerful......but they come at a price and ea user hve to make their own assessment...after all $200 more may be just a cost of a meal to one person but it can be mth of meals to another. When a person is on a tight budget.....if a $900 laptop can perform as well as a $1800...but weights 2.1kg.....it's obvious for most to `bear' the weight as the 1.1k put meals on the table, school fees, pay electrical bills.....u get wat I mean.

windows license? but most of the laptops bought from outside come bundled with windows le. so doesn't matter. other microsoft products they can just download from dreamspark.

for mbp, you can buy from apple website educational pricing. warranty can get applecare from HWZ forums too. other microsoft software can just download from dreamspark when school starts, they also have w7/w8 for download.

average student doesn't need a very fancy laptop. a laptop costing 1k is more than enough for the average student in SIT. idk what huge processing power your work demands.

can please state? if not is just misguided information for future students.

the only work software an average student uses is:

mysql workbench, eclipse, visual studio, mssql, ms office applications.

these are the only ones i can think of currently, i doubt anything else.

maybe photoshop to if you're into creating your own graphical assets, even though most students just rip it off from online sources

Some might need to use Adobe products like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Fireworks and Flash but any laptop with dual core i3 and above + any dedicated graphic card should be sufficient. IMO it's only worth it to get laptop from school if you can get the financial assistance, otherwise just get it from somewhere else.

Some of the fujitsu laptop are claim made in japan tat why the price is more expensive. It is alway better to buy from school as it is alway much cheaper than outside. Just get your cousin a laptop which is light and has dedicated graphic card since he/she will be doing some gaming only. Lastly compare the laptop that you choose and see the price and read review about the laptop that you pick.

go for ultraportable laptops because they are light, slim and should be able to last you a good 3-5 yrs.

if possible go for those ultra portables with dedicated graphics, and nvidia Optimus feature. when it comes to powerpoint slides with lots of pictures, you will need that extra graphic power to process it...

For those constantly need to create multiple OS in their laptop like runing 3-4 instances of WMWare images, it will be good to opt for a i5-i7 processor and lots of RAMs as it definitely helps a lot.

I got a DV6-7009TX with 16GB RAM just enough for me to run say 5 WMWare images at the same time with RAM allocation of 2GB for each image (Eg, AD/DNS/DHCP, File Server (SAN storage simulation), IIS server, RADIUS server and a Windows 7 client). But it will still cough when I start to run a few windows of IE or FireFox at the background to download some files or do some research at the same time.

Because I study Networking and Security in ITE (for my CCNA and CCNP), I need to run a network virtualization software called GNS3 with many instances of routers and switches (for CCNP, up to 20 routers and switches) with many PC/hosts (up to 30) emulation which the laptop can run out of CPU and RAM resources pretty quickly too.

For these cases, a desktop will be a better fit but you cannot bring your desktop in and out of the house as you wish to school or for study group.

To me those high-end entertainment or performance class laptop equipe with a discrete graphics card are for gaming purposes only as most of the graphics job, an onboard graphics like INTEL HD 3000/4000 GPU can still do the job for daily school works. But if it comes with a discrete graphics card with the i5-i7 CPU and cost less than $1400, why not?

recommend you buy your preferred model Brand New In Box laptop from forum here. And get a light laptop that can carry back and forth your house.When i bought my laptop 1.9KG i thought it's very light.i go gym also carry 20KG dumbbell.It's just very troublesome when you have to carry consistently every moment in your school.

don't get gaming laptop, You going to distract your study and if your laptop get overheat due to gaming, kiss goodbye to your data. With the Premium paid for gaming laptop, you can do a well off upgrade on your Desktop.

What are you gonna learn there? If never do any 3D modelling with programs like AutoCAD, i3 processor + Intel HD graphics is more than enough for your usage. Otherwise you will need a laptop with i5 processor + any dedicated graphics card at least. With your budget can get Asus S46CM/S46CB/K45VD, Lenovo G480/Z400, HP ENVY 4/Pavilion g4/Pavilion 14.

Did you mean t430u? Its lousy. Like someone has mentioned, its an ultrabook. and it has only a 3 cell battery. Normal laptops have 6 cell batteries so off the bet, you have half the battery life already. And its not 'powerful' enough to game. Really more for a excel and words kind of usage. Y400 can be used to play games on.

however, Y400 out of stock till about 9 may. I would still highly recommend any poly student to go preorder it now though. It is really a good buy and worth the wait.
