Hello,

I am thinking to hoot a pair of 875 this weekend. It is my first pair of red wings... I have always admired them but finally pulling the trigger. Always been a fan of boots, never went back to sneakers ever since I got my Dr marts and timberland.

Anything I should know of before I get my pair at Orchard?

How often do I have to clean + condition it? And I have read on forums that applying conditioner such as mink oil or other type of leather oil will darken the boots and I am concerned because I do not want my 875 to get dark but I wanna preserve the life of it as well. Can anyone enlighten me on this? and how do I prevent denim stain on the boots because I'll be wearing my raw denim with my 875. A heads up would be helpful because my pair bleeds heavily.

Thanks!

I brush it every weekend. Apply LP every 6 months or so +-
i'm using obenauf lp and it darken it a little. So i cannot comment on this.

For raw jeans,
wash your raw jeans 10 times :s13::s8:
or
fold your long socks onto the boots to cover the portion where your jeans touch the boots.
Personally, a little stain here and there adds that special touch to it.

Ah, thank you for the reply.. I will brush it every weekend as recommended then. But I'm still stumbled on how can I preserve the color of 875 after much wear and caring for it every few months to increase the life span.

Obeanuf darkens, red wings boot oil darkens as well... Hmm. Anyway how does your 875 looks like now after oiling? :D

Anyone has any insight on this?

red wings

Oh it will revert back to the colour before LP?

By LP i'm assuming it is leather protector right? So do you recommend I get the obeanuf one like yours? Is it some all in one conditioner + protect against rain and stuff..?

Thank you for being so helpful :)

Yes, in my case
it revert back to how it was after 2 - 3 weeks.
take note mine was already darken. i'm not talking about color reverting back to brand new state.
For brand new, your very first time applying will definitely darken it a little.

As for which conditioner to use...
If you do a search, there are 2 camps
1 who support Mink oil
1 who support Obeanuf

I came to a conclusion to use Obeanuf LP because i refuse to use anything that comes from mink (some coy claims they obtain it as a by-product from the fur industry)

And yeah, obeanuf is all in one. for the lazy people :D

Learning so much from you :s12:

I think I will use the obeanuf LP then since it's so convenient. I don't even need to purchase conditioner and leather protector separately. My guess is to use damp warm towel to wipe and brush to brush it clean then when dry apply the obeanuf LP and let dry until ready to wear?

When should be my first use of the obeanuf LP? I really don't want it to get dark but I guess if it preserves the lifespan of the boots, I'll do it. But I'll also check with the salesman at the store to find out more info from him and if it's possible to preserve the color of 875.

Thank you!

Edit: Oh and where can I get obeanuf LP in Singapore? Lazy to do shipping and online stuff..

If it's convenience you're looking for why not just purchase the care products from Red Wing's store. Obeanuf LP is really strong stuff designed for firemen. You might not need so strong protection. There are plenty of mixed reactions to using Obenauf LP for shoes used for everyday wear.

Brush and use a shoecream. That should be enough for low fuss maintenance.

Hi darthsid11111,

Thank you for your reply... yeah I've went online and searched it and it really darkens the entire leather so I think it might be a tad too strong for everyday use.

What type of shoe cream from red wings would I be looking for then?

I've come across other brands such as lexol and dr martens wonder balsam to care for leather without darkening them. Anyone has any idea if it's suitable for 875?

If you're going down to the redwings store, just buy everything there and ask the sales person. They will be able to best advise you.

Typical shoecare regime for leather shoes are brush before and after every wear and use a cream weekly to moisturise the leather. Wax if you need polish. As Redwings are rugged shoes, I doubt you will need to wax you shoes. Products like Redwing's Boot Cream contain waxes which will help protect against water to a certain degree. Keep in mind that leather doesn't soak up water like canvas/cotton. The only water protection you need is to prevent water spots, and a shoe cream may be sufficient.

Generic shoe creams include Collonil, Tarrago, TRG etc.

Can't speak for Oak Street Bootmakers.
But can vouch for Alden Indy construction quality. Picked mine up from https://zh-tw.facebook.com/essentialelements. But have to warn you though, their stocks are limited and may not have the size you require.

Hi guys, I've had a pair of redwings 8134's for a couple of years now. I've been applying the redwing mink oil on them about once a month. Lately, I've seen some pairs that are REALLY shiny such as
fc2blog_20130120213438bab.jpg

Any idea what do they apply to get them to shine like that? I've heard that mink oil isn't so good for shining.
