Depends how one see it lor. Would you want to spend time to wear a new pair to season it again? Those who went through will know it's not the easiest and comfortable.

Denim and leather are same lor, it will evolve with time and wears. They will wrap into your shape and take form, depending on the lifestyle, habits and climate.

Actually one of the reason why i still kinda refuse to resole my 8165 (my 1st Red Wing) is because it is in pretty bad condition as i didnt take care of it at all. I just wear and trash nia, occasionally slap on normal mink oil to condition it. Few months ago i brought it to OGW for the free cleaning service, Han was staring at me WTH i did to the boots... haha :s13:
After the washing, it kinda wash out many dirt and oil though still have residue. And it reveals peeling and cracking liaoz, which is main reason why i feel reluctant to resole. Imagine spend $100+ resole le, and it cracks peels like mad. My wallet hurts sia... :p haha

You started Red Wing much earlier than me. My first pair (8165) was back in 2010, followed by 875 6 months later. I only bought 8106 back in June this year. I remember when I bought the 875 in HK, it was like $100++ cheaper than Singapore lor, which is why i was willing to lug it back to country haha
But recently when i was in HK last year, i notice they have adjusted their pricing to be very very close to Singapore already. Then when i was in Taipei 2 months ago, i see the pricing there same too. I suspect Red Wing has standardise the pricing across the APAC... :(

Hi guys, just bought my 1st pair of red wings (1907) today. Last time I wore boots was in army. The staff at OGW were helpful and professional. However, the one that helped me told me not to put in insoles for 2 weeks to allow the shoe to mould. I wore it home after buying and it was ganpua painful, no less thanks to my heavily callused and corn feet. I know everybody has different opinions, but is there any basis to the no insoles during break in thing?

Yep, let it mold to your feet first. Wear thick socks to ease the break it pain. I also usr plasters. Once broken in it'll be comfortable

Breaking in is part and parcel for these boots. I don't know if there are anyone had smooth good time from day1. Wear the no4 green socks with them. IMO they are the best match. Even Red Wing brand socks are much thinner, so no use buying their socks.

Do trust the staff at OGW, I find they are pretty professional so far. No pushing sales, and always giving humble suggestions. Last year I almost wanted to get a Beckman though i wear a size6 and they only come in 7 locally. Han described to me it will be uncomfortable, and told me to hold back because there are news of something similar (flatbox) releasing in 2017. Then when i was buying my 8106 in June this year , one of their lady staff was helping me pick the correct size; either 5.5E or 6D. She was very patient helping me and giving her opinions. I wanted a 5.5E actually (same size as my 875), but she thinks likewise because according to her the 6D should mould nicely to my small wide feet instead. I listened to her advice bought size 6D, and never regret I did. :)

Btw, I never wear insoles for my pairs too. Let the leather insoles mould to the shape of your feet.

of course, above are some of my personal experience and 2 cents worth, the decision is in your hands. :)

Hi Good Bros in VR,

I seldom go to Orchard nowadays. Can someone point me to the red wing boutiques in Sg? I have one size US6E boots and now looking to get another pair.

Thanks in advance for your advice. If anyone selling his boots with the above mentioned size and in good condition, I'd like to get it from you too.

Do trust

my first pair of boots (excluding the ones in army) were red wings and then i moved on to boots made from horween, CF stead, shinki, toscano and leather from other tanneries.

never looked back

i have about 4 pairs of boots currently and sold 12 away. im not going to pinpoint anyone out there in the market but i just want to dispel any untruths that has been circulating around

it is absolutely not true that your feet should hurt in a brand new pair of boots. my feet hurt terribly wearing red wings but didn't feel a thing in other brands/makers. it all boils down to the leather and the ones used by red wing from their SB foot tannery leave much to be desired. at one point i owned a 12 inch upland boot made of horween cxl that rose all the way up my shins and i didnt feel a thing when i wore it for the first time while on holiday in new zealand

I remember during my army days (2012-2014), red wing shoes and nudie jeans were very popular among my friends.

I’m still wearing like this inspirational photo almost everyday! Just change shirt only

Thanks for your input. I am probably not as into boots as you, so I plan to continue wearing it for a good period before deciding.I watched stranger things and saw chief hopper wearing a boot with the signature white soles. A search online revealed that he wasn't wearing red wings in the show, but my interest was triggered.

theres actually quite a number of people who totally give up on boots all because of so much untruths circulating out there. a few pages earlier in this thread someone bought a pair of red wings and even though he was told it will hurt breaking in, he gave up on it after only a few days of wear cos he absolutely couldnt tolerate it. whats worse is he swore off boots on the whole. that to me is the ultimate pity cos his impression of all boots was tarnished by whatever he read about red wings or was told about them. that all boots will hurt just as bad as red wings which couldnt be further from the truth. and its equally sad to hear that they paid a bomb by purchasing retail and ended up with something that kills their feet :(:(

i dont visit this thread much but when i do, i try my best to dispel any untruths especially cos 99 out of 100 people who venture into boots for the very first time will buy a red wing or dr martens. and majority of these folks will stick with red wings (assuming they dont give up from all the pain). by that, u can just imagine the entire boot wearing community is simply brimming with untruths about how painful boots are :s13:

You may be right. Probably the breaking in is individual to individual, and not applying to all boots. Too bad, Red Wing boots are not gentle on my feet. So its not fair to generalise it as Red Wing = pain. Because else I wouldn't have bought them also lor.

But to be fair, SAF no.4 leather boots (not gortex) are the most comfortable i ever wear. Now that I have ROD, actually i wont mind wearing it for leisure. haha
