realme 5 4+128GB $279 siaolang

Actually 32GB is good enough for me. 128GB would mean lots of data are at risk. Don't make sense.
Realme 5 at 6.5 inch is too huge for most users. It would be great if they update the Realme 3 with the Realme 5's SD665 processor, and go with pure Android at the same time. Because their ColorOS not very well received, and also takes up an immense amount of storage space. Even the Google Digital Well-being app could not be uninstalled. Same for the Chrome browser app.

I chose to buy Realme 5 today (3GB/64GB at S$199) and not local set Redmi 8 (4GB/64GB at S$199) or Redmi Note 8 (4GB/64GB at S$269). This is to replace the dead Mi Max 1 (bloated battery) used by my kid. Redmi Note 8 should be a better phone, but then it costs more.

Color OS is okay, simple to use, not bad. The phone runs pretty smoothly and camera is also okay. We have Oppo R7 and R11S at home so I am familiar with Color OS. BTW, I am using Huawei P20 myself.

For most of the Android phones, you will not be able to uninstall Chrome anyway, without root.

Local set, from Challenger Jurong Point. BTW, Realme 3 is at S$219 for the 4GB/64GB version. Realme 3 Pro 6GB/128GB is at S$329, in the same shop.

The Oppo shop opposite Challenger does not carry Realme 3/5.

One thing abt the Realme 3 that I dun really like is the thick chin bezel... even the cheaper Realme C2's chin is slimmer than its one.. but anyway some ppl dun really get bothered by how slim their phone bezels are..

Thanks for sharing. Note that I have initiated a thread on EDMW headlined as Redmi 8 vs Realme 5 which one is better?
Btw which color did you go for? The blue crystal design or the purple crystal design?

I've been using Redmi 2s & 4x. Now I want to upgrade but the Redmi 7,8 are quite huge for me. So I wonder if there are any other phone in this range and price that's not so huge.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Both will be okay. SD665 on the Realme 5 is of course better than SD439 on Redmi 8. But then some people will prefer MIUI and Xiaomi (more updates).

The shop only has purple color and my daughter likes purple color anyway. It is not bright purple though. I myself will like the blue color better.

All the good new low end Android phones (say between S$120 - S$220) seem to be above 6 inch now. Realme C2/3/5, Redmi 8, Samsung A10/A10S, Nokia 3.2, Huawei Y6 Pro, Vivo Y12, etc.

But you can try Neffos (by TP-Link) and they have quite a few phones at 5.5 inch or similar, MTK processor though.

I am not so sure about the price of Nokia 4.2 in Singapore, it has 5.71 inch screen and runs Android One on MTK P22.

Older model like Nokia 3.1 has small screen as well. It has a very low end MTK processor but runs Android One so maybe it is still okay.

May be I stick with Redmi 8 when the price comes lower. There was a period KASIA selling the older Redmi 7 (the higher RAM version) at only $150/-. After a while, not listed anymore. Hope Redmi 8 price would come down to around there. Also considering Redmi Note 8 Pro for the NFC.

Reason why I don't like big phone is that if I wear jeans, already my smaller Redmi 4X, there is some "bending" stress on the phone. If I get a bigger phone, I don't know how much stress it would be.

If you are okay with China set, then both Redmi 8 and Redmi Note 8 are pretty cheap. Redmi Note 8 Pro is also not very expensive if you are okay with China set. But I do not like MTK processor myself. We have Apple, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo phones at home and none of them use MTK processor.

You can look for the Mi A2 Lite, has a compact size with 5.6" display.

Shopee has several sellers selling it with some shipping from Malaysia direct: https://shopee.sg/search?keyword=mi%20a2%20lite&maxPrice=400&minPrice=100&page=0&sortBy=sales

Please note that the Redmi Note 8 @ $178 is China Set with China ROM, need to manually install Google Play Store and services. Although can unlock bootloader and flash global ROM but quite a hassle for most ppl.

By the way, Realme 5 is directly competing against Redmi 8 (in which case the Realme 5 wins) at the same price point.
Realme 5 PRO which was just released locally is meant to compete with Redmi Note 8. Better specs (Snapdragon 712, Sony IMX586 sensor) *RRP not out yet, might be around same price as Redmi Note 8.

Yes I agree and that is why I chose to buy Realme 5.

And I myself do not buy China set, I only buy local set. My Mi Max 1 was a local set as well bought early 2017 from Challenger.

I prefer local warranty set. So I go for sellers who sell these with some discounts. Shops like KASIA, Mobile Sq and WhyMobile.

u don't need to unlock bootloader to install gplay services and all that, can just simply sideload without system modification. only flashing global rom then need to unlock, but simply installing gplay manually usually accomplishes the same thing.

Yes, true. Hence 'Although'.

And what happens when you reset the phone? Need to reinstall Google services right?
This is a major inconvenience for most ppl.
Sure you may be able to do it easily for yourself, but others find this a hassle.

There's a reason why phone dealers don't sell China sets with China ROM.
At most is Global export sets (global version), OR China sets flashed with Global ROM.
You don't want customers to keep coming back to ask to install Google Play.

Purple one is good. Not easily dirtied if one use without a protective case. I'm gonna adopt a no case approach for all future new phones. More comfortable without the artificial sheath, I suppose..

I see. You are brave.

All our mobile phones and iPads will all be destroyed by my two kids if without the protective cases and screen protectors.
