for 100 yuan more you can have:
Better SOC
Better display
Bigger Battery
Headphone Jack
Better cameras (?)
AC wifi support
Slightly smaller phone

You lose:
100 yuan
Unibody design
Actually I prefer not to have unibody design.

No headphone jack, slowly trickling down to Redmi series as well. :s22:
There's 3.5mm jack on the Redmi S2, refer to the diagram in the quote below..

Isn't the 999 same as 1299? Just that the Rams and storage are it's difference.

But am wondering how does it fairs against the redmi 5 plus??(it's like a replacement for redmi 5plus lei :s13:)

looks worse than expected. the antenna lines inferred that the phone had a metal unibody but it has antenna lines with a plastic shell. whats the damn point

It's the same design style as the Redmi Note 5A series. :o

The lines at the rear camera and bottom are just extra design features, more for aesthetic purpose only.

The OPPO A75 also use such design style too, possibly due to lower cost while still maintaining a streamlined design.

Very hard to justify considering it costs the same as Redmi 5 Plus in China and has a worse display and plastic build, too much given up I think just for the dual-cameras. :s11:

Very soon will have triple cameras. Better still, why not be the first to have dual microSD card slots. More versatile ...

Redmi S2 caters more to those who like taking photos especially selfies.

Redmi 5 Plus is an all-rounder with decent raw specs. The camera is just decent too.

Turns out Redmi S2 is indeed the Redmi Note 5A Prime successor. Rumoured to be launched as Redmi Y2 in India (Redmi Y1 was the Note 5A Prime in India).

Explains the plastic build and 3080mAh battery (same size as Redmi Note 5A Prime). Very very confusing...

This one have got EIS yo
Some more got triple cards tray slot and Android Oreo, not bad.
Only thing is the double antenna lines spoil its appearance.
Follow Oppo for what? Why cannot follow the Nokia's designs and looks? Follow Nokia or Motorola lah ....

Meanwhile, Singapore still has yet to see the Mi MIX 2S, Redmi Note 5 officially while other markets getting the new Redmi S2 already.. :s22:
