I actually didn't see xeonboy posting demeaning comments about these chicken-legged people (there, I just did it, but in my defense, I DO even lift). What I saw was a question that could be genuine. Anyway, in response to this question, it could be due to many factors:
1. They don't train legs.
2. They train legs, but they train them wrongly/much less than upper body/as an afterthought
3. Their skeletal structure and muscle insertions(i.e. "genetics") make it less favorable for them to put on muscle or for muscle to look sizable.

It's not our fault if we have Indian aka the small calves genes. :s13: :s13:

bench is not an issue, people normally don't hog it too long and easier to share.
for me the problem is the squat rack

That's the thing so many gyms have so many cardio machine. Why can't they have 2 squat racks 2 bench presses.

True. I always wonder why most gyms are like this. And the cardio machines aren't even used that much.

People usually don't hog benches and squat racks too long.....unless they're in groups. :s22:

I guess depends on the program that u are on.
Like i am doing 5/3/1 with BBB so effectively i need to do 11 sets including warmup sets. But of course if the person dun mind to keep swapping weight and the weight we used is quite close i am fine to share too. however I have had issue when i am on program with very strict rest time when , always exceed my rest time because of sharing.

If weight is quite close then no problem, the problem is adjusting the height of the barbell, most likely you will need to unload most of the weight first.
If the height is different, I don't even bother asking, just wait until the guy finished

Some ppl doing SL/SS also will use the rack for quite long in workout B, squat OHP and DL.

Assuming you're both squatting, unless you're Yao Ming and sharing with a dwarf, setting the bar a notch below what you're usually comfortable with shouldn't affect your squatting.

I can stay in the same power rack for over an hour, but I always offer to share when someone comes up and asks how many sets I have left.

Oh what I meant by different height is the other guy is doing deadlift (bar on the ground), or a taller guy doing OHP (2 notch above), or some time they doing bent over row / rack pull

Hi all,

Just a quick question. I see people wearing those huge belts (not sure what they're called?) in the gym sometimes when lifting weights. The purpose is to prevent spinal injuries?

I'm thinking of buying one (not sure if Clubfitt gyms supply these), because when I lift overhead weights (especially military presses), I tend to bend backwards and arch my back quite a bit due to the load, especially on the last few reps. In these cases, this belt would help?

Hope it's cheap and affordable.

*PS*: I think I saw the bespectacled guy in the gym today doing those strange "pilates with weights" exercises that the other guy mentions in another thread previously.

The purpose is to flex your abs against so you can lift more.

The mistaken purpose is to protect your back.

The looking for trouble purpose is to try and use it as a crutch for poor form instead of correcting the form in the first place.

*PS* you arch your back because the weight is to heavy for you to lift vertically, and my arching your back you're making it a bench or incline bench press instead of an overhead press.

Tks! So the best way is to drop weights? Cos I'm thinking if I don't challenge myself hard enough, I won't see results.

If you use your chest to lift your shoulder press you won't see results in your shoulders either.

Just some clarification, if u r doing full ROM bar starts at chest. When u push the bar till just b4 chin u need to arch back in order to make way for the bar to get pass your chin then move forward once the bar pass your head. Likewise when lowering the bar down. So at some point u still need to arch back but just instantaneous. Isn't it?

Tilt is a smaller angle than arch. and you can tilt just your head and not necessarily your back for the same effct.

Hi all,

Just wondering, but do those freelance personal trainers cost a lot less than those full-time in-house trainers from gyms (Genesis, Fitness First, Gold's Gym etc.)?

Also, do these freelance personal trainers do meal plans / nutrition plans for you?

I'm considering looking for one, especially those that have proven track records in helping hardgainers bulk-up fast. The personal training sessions in those gyms are way beyond my budget.

Tks!

Hi TS,

Most freelance personal trainers cost about the same as in-house trainers for commercial gyms.

And I'm not sure about other personal trainers, but I provide full diet, training and supplement advice for my clients.

Way to go weekiat. Shameless way of self-promotion. I used to respect you man. Ive read your blog since 2010 when you used to be on the other forums and thought you were a humble, cool guy who had some really good reads. Now, not anymore eh?

The internet is a great resource from everything from nutrition to training protocols. There is absolutely no need to get a personal trainer unless 1. You have previous injuries and your physio recommends you a weighttraining program for rehab. 2. You are in your 40s with money to blow. 3. You're a f*king loser with no motivation to even do research and go to the gym (the moment you dont have a PT, you'll be back to square 1 essentially)

Firstly, why i say you dont need a PT, is because everyone is different. YOU have to find out what works for you. Whether you respond well to heavy stimuli, volume, cardio etc. Trainers LOVE to distinguish themselves, saying how special you are as they personally 'customize' and calculate your macros, meal plan, training protocols... ... Yeah, google does the same for free. Youtube has tons of tutorial videos on all your various lifts and you dont have to pay a cent.

What makes it worst these days are personal trainers themselves tend to look good but arent even healthy in their own right. Anyone can become a jacked trainer, just take the right supps and go for a course, thats all. There is a fine line between looking healthy and actually being healthy. Big muscles do not equate to anything. Once you're in this game, you realize everyone does the same thing. 80% of muscle building is genetics. Its consistency that sets the do-ers from the dreamers.

What i'm not saying is all trainers are bad. I'm just saying there are better ways to spend your money. The fitness industry is already full of contradictory information. Which basically all boils down to what works for someone, may not work for you. No one would know you better than you know you. Motivate yourself, find that inner beast, go out there, lift some heavy ass weight.

Peace.

Lol Weekiat.

Based on your signature, you claim to be a PT with 11 years experience, but you're currently 23 years old right? So that would mean you've been training clients since you were 12 years old?

I don't think having a hobby at an adolescent age equates to "experience" in a field such as personal training.
