RMA PSU - deal

Rma a FSP Aurum 400w 80+ bronze ,5 yr warranty but power degraded on the 3rd yr so rma. Was given 2 option

1) free 1 to 1 exchange to same model reflurish unit (look old to me)
2) top up $45 for 550w 92+ platinium with 2 yr warranty from now. (which my warranty still got 2 yr more for 400w 80+ bronze )

which has a better deal ?

I sympathize with the staff doing your rma man. First of all, the product didn't spoil, it just degraded like every other psu would.
Second, 400W also wanna rma new one. Give you refurbished say looks old. Suggest a Pay a bit more get a much better one, then unhappy right.

Second, 400W also wanna rma new one. Give you refurbished say looks old. Suggest a Pay a bit more get a much better one, then unhappy right.

Get the old one. Since your current spec should be around 90w idle and 230w load

No, you didn't offend me of course. And no, I wasn't sarcastic, I was merely quoting your words and adding my opinion to it.

Because now the situation is like you asking the kopitiam uncle to cook you a new bowl of noodle for free because you left it there for too long and it turned cold.
Then now you ask the forum if you should take the newly cooked noodle that looks less nice or top up $2 for a bigger bowl of noodle.

Now, either way still makes you look very bad.

I suggest, honestly, for you to get a brand new one from FSP since their service is so good and they actually entertain you. Get a much more powerful one since you may want to change rig in next 5 years.

His system will never need more than 400W. 300W can easily run on his system.

Yeah, and calculating 80% of 400W is 320W. Once the rig spike in power, its dead man.

Sent in my gold 550w modular . They told me phrase out give me a option to change to 550w platinum and 2years additional warranty at $15dollars only happy

my system barely exceeds 400W at the mains on full load overclocked...

TS intel system unlikely to need more than 250 W at full load and that is being generous... that is if the 95W tdp i5 and 108W radeon 5770 are fully loaded with all the hd, fans, dvd fully spinning...

TS just save yr money and get the old one.
if u intend to get a 200-250W tdp Gpu in the future then spend the 45 sgd

Degrading psu... can it be his motherboard issue?

Anyway, either options are fine. I will top-up for a new psu though if I am in your shoes and going there again.

im not running on a 400w generic psu... its a 450W superflower design psu...

in any case, 400W at main at 90% efficiency is actually 360 W actual power needed hence i do have 20% buffer (for the 'overrated' capacitor degradation).

This is a simplistic way of looking at the issue, I would not mention the consideration on the power load of the rails but yes that was looked into.

fsp aurum do have some issues with the quantity of caps but I do wonder what the TS meant by degradation and why the aurum became a 'bronze' rated psu

Technically i am a noob for PSU and computer stuff so i term it as degraded PSU not sure if it is the right technical word to use.Please correct me if i am wrong.

Have been using this PSU for 3 years and one fine day it just auto restart by itself whenever i play 3D game (fifa 2013). So borrow a spare PSU from my friend and test it. It was fine throughout the day after the replacement .So i can confirm the problem is with the PSU.

I expect this PSU to last me 4 year (Warranty was 5 years) as i am not a hardcore gamer , mainly watch movie or surf net.Maybe my expectation was too high due to good review. My bad. Luckily FSP service was good and allow me to rma. Thumbup for FSP.

After reading all your input will get a new PSU for the below reason.
1) Don't want to make another trip down to service center again if the reflusbish unit has the same problem after few month.
2)With the extra watts maybe can create a bufffer for degrading.
3)Can use for future upgrade.

Really appreciate all the valueable input by the expert here. (except DeenzX)
