you need to apply for International Driving Permit from AAS. I did a self drive in Taiwan 3 years ago. It was fun and relaxing. Need to rent a car with GPS.

Which car rental company did you rent with?
Also, is there any company/way that allows me to collect the car from Kao Siung and drop off in Tai Pei?

I rented from Formosa Car Rental, contact person is Karen Lin. You can find the company in Facebook too. You can pick up from Kaohsiung and drop off in Taipei.

I went to their website and check by I can't seem to be able to find their Tai Pei office. Do they have a office there?

I collected the rental car from Karen in Taoyuan Airport carpark. At the end of my stay, Karen came to collect the rental car from me at the hotel. No worries. You just need to get them to quote you. Hope this helps.

Singapore is right hand drive. Taiwan is left hand drive.

Thanks for the note. No problem for me as I'm from the Regional Automotive Industry and I drive both left hand and right hand drive equally much.

Hi,

You may want to consider hiring a driver (petrol & toll charges included). I did a family trip last Nov with a driver. I find it hassle free and the driver can recommend you good food and places to go. Driver also will explain along the journey (but not really tour guide hor). I don't pay extra for driver's accomodation, but will ask him to join for meals.

can see my Nov itinerary: Taiwan Nov 2012 Itinerary - Taiwan Free & Easy Travel -

Thank you for the suggestion.

I was there travelling the whole of Taiwan the other time when I as there with my family. We hired a driver to take us around.

I understand the pros you mentioned, but because of the cons (not flexible, driver was not that service oriented), in the end, I ended up proposing to do a self drive on my own.

Most car rental companies do provide GPS upon request. So do remember to let them know that you need GPS when you are making your reservation.

Yes, any AA office will do. I think you can also register online but quite troublesome...need to scan in the photos and also pay for printing/delivery. Heading down to their office will be more convenient...can be done in less than 10 minutes.

Manage to redo my travel blog on 3 trips. Doubt I will be able to recover lost content and photo of other trips.
2 of the trips are self-drive in Taiwan. Used carplus both times.
