Lets lighten things up a little, and will be interesting to have a DSLR photo thread to show us your favourite shots to share and learn - both newbies and old birds. No themes! it can be macro, architecture, portraits etc. There are many experienced members here that has given much assistance in the forum, do contribute !

May i suggest members to be cordial and friendly and share some compositional insights / technical settings on how the shots were achieved to help newbies or eager learners as well when requested.

I have been shooting for a little more than 2 yrs. I'll start with some humble shots of mine.

thanks!

the light before dusk
shot taken with a 135mm focal length, stabilised on a tripod, leveled with the horizon. it was 3 shots stitched. by virtue of it being a telephoto, there was minimal distortion correction in the stitching process, i usually maintain a quarter overlap per frame. however for wider focal lengths, care must be taken to ensure greater overlap.

I am an astronomy as well as photography hobbyist. Consequently, I had always wanted to do a milky way shot. I just got my K-x not long ago and took it on a short getaway to P.Redang Malaysia.
I took this shot at P.Redang and was quite happy with the result considering that i was using only a kit lens and a budget DSLR. I thought that i wld only see a faint streak of stars.

20shots and 10 dark frames

evolutioner, the <dandelion> is a nice take. love the softness and yet the details of the shot

very intense and beautiful shot LearnIT. i have a soft spot for such star shots, unfortunately the local skies are not the best subjects. Maybe i will try something like what u did with stacking the next time i go overseas. do those light pollution astronomy filters work locally ?

here is one taken at tekapo mt john observatory in pitch darkness. Milky way on top, the street and town lights of tekapo town below

tripod with wired remote. taken at 12mm with the widest aperture( which was f4.5 since thats as wide as the sigma 12-24 can go ), iso5000, 70 seconds. it was a single shot. retrospectively if i place a GND filter in reverse to cover the town lights, i might not have overexposed them that badly.

the sun illuminates the moon, and to avoid overexposure, people recomment shooting with the sunny 16 rule i.e f16 at 1/iso setting. you can always vary it a little depending on various atmospheric conditions.

but it will be hard pressed to review any dimmer stars at the background with those settings. how about doing a stacking, with a frame for the moon, and a frame for the stars ? i got no good solution.

war memorial at christchurch, next to the cathedral.

taken in a frosty morning, tripod + wired cable release allowed a longer exposure in the dimmer lights with minimal vibration. The slight gradation in background caught my eyes to make the shot.

85mm focal length
f16 gives more depth of field
1/8 second exposure meant i needed firm stabilisation, handholding is a no no unless you do not mind motion blur.

read up on sunny 16 rule... thanks!
stacking mean 2 photo or 3 photo of over/under expose add together?

ya probably one exposed for the moon, one exposed for the stars. but i thought it might be difficult because if the exposure for the stars is too long, u will be getting a very bright moving moon streak instead.

the last i shot the stars, i always intentionally leave out the moon

happy experimenting :)

Tower jump in Auckland. Could have used a telephoto to isolate the person, but i thought a wider take could include the tower and the platform into perspective.
