I am a noob in CPUs so need advice from the experts here. I am currently on an i5 2500 3.3ghz I found out that I do not meet the minimum requirements to play witcher 3. I was thinking of getting either an i5 4690 or i5 4690k. But is there really a huge upgrade in performance between my current 2500 and the new 4690? Because the 2500 is 3.3ghz and the 4690 is 3.5ghz.

I also read that there is negligible difference in performance between the 4690 and 4690k, only if I want to OC then I should get the 4690k. But I saw some benchmark and there are some differences in performance between the two.

So should I upgrade now? And which of the 2 should I upgrade to?

Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz IS the minimum .

2500k and 2500 has no big difference except 2500K is clockable(unlocked) and better Integrated Graphics .

I bought it end 2013 so don't intend to upgrade it anytime soon but my processor IIRC about 4 to 5 years old already.

How to check I noob? My graphics settings I use the nvidia experience program to optimize the settings for me. I think all nvidia gfx comes with that program. It optimizes and auto sets the best settings for performance for your gfx for a particular game.

Just list down the full specs of your current rig so others can have a clearer picture on how to diagnose for you.

You can check with MSI afterburner. Open Afterburner then start playing your game. After playing for a while you can alt tab and see the CPU usage on the side. Alternatively you can set the overlay to show your CPU usage in game.

Your rig by default should be able to handle mid - high settings with no issues.
Check temps on the PC bah and clean off dust. Maybe its the temps on your GFX making your card throttle.

Possible thermal paste lost its effectiveness. Try clean up PC and repaste thermal compound for cheap fix then see how from there.

Dunno if it's a thermal issue because it doesn't happen after playing for a long time it happens immediately when I start the game right after I start up the computer. So what I do is move the mouse around and it lags I walk around and it lags but after awhile the gameplay becomes smooth again and it doesn't lag. But everytime I start the game change from one character to another and after the game zooms to the other character in another part of the map the game lags like crap again and I need to move the mouse around walk around awhile before the performance improves. Same problem when playing GTA online. When I start a mission the game lags like crap. Like the com needs to warm up before it can run the game smoothly. Weird because I don't have that issue when I play other games.

2500 at 3.3ghz is really cutting it close nowadays. I need minimum of 4ghz to maintain speed with my 970. Some games like dying light even benefit from 4.5ghz.

Your 770 is slightly weaker than a 970 but still 3.3 is not enough. Wont die but in some games will have cpu bottleneck.

What mobo r u using? Some might offer limited overclocking. You can try software overclocking if desperate too, but that im not well versed need to ask others
