That is like saying that although dip starting point is different from a degree starting point but one could still catch up even w a dip as it is the working capabilities that counts.
U know that it is difficult to catch up w a dip isn't it?
And u sure that different degree gives u different starting point?(less the scholar track)
More like employers prefer more prestigious uni grads and for those less prestigious uni, they do not employ them as there are grads from well-regarded uni to choose from.
well why do u wanna compare someone with a dip vs someone with a degree?
yes different degree gives you different starting point. an example: Uni A is more prestigious than Uni B, two fresh grads from Uni A and Uni B w/o working experience
both went into the same industry and work as marketing execs. Uni A grad gt employed by a more prestigious coy, gets a higher starting pay and slightly more job responsibilities. Uni B grad went into a normal coy and gets a lower starting pay. this is an example of different starting point im talking about.
however, after that, things can start to change depending on individuals and many other factors. to bring my example further:
Uni B grad works very hard and performs well and gt headhunted to join Uni A grad coy and gets a position higher than Uni A grad.
Uni A grad performs so-so and gets a slight increment in pay only.
like what you have said, for the first job, employers would prefer a more prestigious uni grad. thats true and fair, after all the candidate earns the place in the prestigious uni himself. most use that as a comparison for grads w/o working experience. but there are really many other situations and factors to consider. some undergrads have relevant working experiences, some go on to do interships and performs well and gets a gd testimonials etc etc.
there are really gd and black sheeps amongst all different kind of grads from different unis. in my course of work, i have seen employees with really gd attitudes and abilities and i was surprised (last time) when they told me they were SIM grads (mostly) or other DL grads.
