My current Singtel Optical Network Router, Huawei HG8244H, is about 5 years old. The past months I have experienced intermittent internet disconnection. Sometimes few times a day, each lasting several minutes to sometimes 10 mins.

Is it the problem with the ONR? Since it is rather old.

You can always call Singtel to get support in this case. Usually they will allow you to get free replacement if the issue is likely related to the ONR.

If you are facing wireless disconnection, it may have nothing to do with the ONR since it may well be the problem with the wireless router (eg: SIngtel AC Plus is super lousy if you are still using it). But if you are facing wired disconnection then it may have something to do with the ONR.

Wired connection. I have since replaced the old singtel router with a singtel mesh router. It has been more than 24 hours and internet signal appears to have stabilised.

How long can the ONR last anyway? Should I change since it is over 5 years old?

ONT/ONR can last very long (say 10 years) and no problem with 5 years usually. But sometimes it does get damaged or the performance got degraded over the years. So please contact Singtel for support.

Generally agree. I have had to replace once after less than 5 years because a lightning surge damaged the motherboard (Ericsson ONT replaced by ZTE ONR operating in ONT mode). I also had to replace the power supply another time as again, I think a lightning surge damaged it.

I replaced my Singtel Ericsson ONT with ZTE ONT back in Sept 2018, after 6 years and 8 months of usage, due to power supply contact issue. Power supply and power supply contact seem to be the weakest link for the ONT.

Has your problem been resolved? I've been experiencing intermittent disconnections for several months now, sometimes up to tens of times per day

The disconnections have dwindled after changing my mobile phone's connection setting to the singtel home broadband, from randomized MAC to device MAC. This seems like an inexplicable fix but it appears to resolve the issue somewhat. I just had another disconnection this morning. So can't say it is the right solution.

Are you using Singtel ONR?

What is the main wireless router?

Singtel issued wireless router like Singtel AC Plus is very lousy. Singtel issued mesh solution like Airties/Askey/Arcadyan are also pretty bad.

How to tell single or two nodes?

1) Single node means single wireless router (not using mesh solution). Examples:
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Router (AC1900)
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600

2) Two nodes mean you have a mesh solution. Examples:
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Router AC1900 -- wireless connection -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600 1st node -- wireless connection -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600 2nd node

Or using Ethernet backhaul (better performance)
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600 1st node
Singtel ONR -- Singtel Mesh Extender AC2600 2nd node

Not using extender. Should be single node mesh router.
Looks like this one.

Yes I use Singtel ONR.

I moved half a year ago. Before I moved, I used an ONT. I had one ASUS XT8 router connected to the ONT and another XT8 connected to the first XT8 wirelessly. It worked properly.

After I moved, I got an ONR. I have an ASUS AX6000 and four XT8 routers. I don't want to use Access Point (AP) mode. Singtel said they could not enable bridging mode for me. Luckily, I found that if I use the fourth port of the ONR, I can use router mode for my AX6000.

My connections:

ONR -> AX6000 -> 2G switch -> 3 cables, each connected to an XT8 router. [The reason I have the switch is that I tried to build a 2G wireless intranet at home.]

It worked for several months. About three months ago, I started to experience disconnection problems. Sometimes it disconnects every minute. I called Singtel, but they said they could not help because I use a third-party router.

I have tried two changes:
  1. I used one cable to connect to a port of the ONR, and set an old router to AP mode.
  2. I removed the 2G switch. The other two cables connect to the AX6000 directly.
I have the two Wi-Fi networks running at the same time. Solution 1 is better. The disconnection problem happens much less frequently. Solution 2 has fewer disconnection problems compared to the original connection plan, but still happens frequently.

I see. So you only have single Singtel Mesh Router. Your wireless coverage may not be good enough. So you have to upgrade to a better one or go with mesh solution.

Probably you want to post your floor plan with details of the locations of the Singtel ONR, the LAN ports in the rooms and the current location of the Singtel Mesh Router. Do you have Singtel TV box?

Wow, you certainly have good routers.

For 1Gbps plan and unbridged ONR, none of the ports will be bridged. So I believe you are having Double NAT situation. So you may want to set the AX6000 in AP mode to see if that helps.

Still Double NAT should not cause so much problems. Just wondering if you have many devices or not? If yes, I think the Singtel ONR may not be able to handle.

I will suggest you move out of Singtel after contract expiration. Or if you really like Singtel -- upgrade to Singtel 1+1 Gamber Bundle plan and then use the AX6000 in Dual WAN Load Balancing mode. You can sell the RT-AX86U to offset some of the price increase.
