Hi everyone!

I have a bit of savings around 10k for investment. I saw a lot of threats suggesting blue chips and such, but I not sure whether what I should invest on.

My target is simple: Low risk and low return (Low risk is more impt, as I am a kiasi guy LOL)

Currently I am saving all my money on banks and I felt like not worth it. So decided to take a step forward to use my money for investment.

So which option should I go for? Unit Trust? Blue chips? or?

Thank You very much as I am a noob in investment, really appreciate it :)

Usually I don't joke in this forum but here goes - in before wahkao3.

Serious mode - TS, I presume low risk means capital preservation? If so, fixed deposit is the way to go. If you can stomach some volatility (say +-5% risk max), then maybe you could go for bonds and bond/fixed income funds/ETFs. You still need to study bond characteristics before you jump in.

If you progress further along, shares and unit trusts (especially those equity ones) would be higher in risk, and I think I shall stop here (forget about derivatives). If you decide to skinny dip into equities aka shares, I suggest you read through some basics on fundamental analysis (FA for short) before you go in. As you can see, some known blue chip companies recently went down as much as almost 5% in the past few days, and if you cannot stomach that, either you avoid or you have to adapt.

Hi TS,

My personal picks are oil stocks such as Ezion, Keppel Corp, Sem corp. they have lost quite alot due to the falling oil prices and we all know that oil prices cannot stay low forever. A time frame of 6 to 12 months should see a return of 20%. Else these companies do pay decent dividents too. Not really low risk but i think its a good risk to take. Good luck.

Ps: vested in kep corp and ezion too.

ocbc 360: try to hit 3.05%.

abf A35bond fund, some fluctuation arnd 2% dividend.

depends on your investment horizon n current salary, e.g. if earn more than 40k. top up cpf sa or set up an srs account n put theoney in. save around 1k plus in taxes (a dollar saved is a dollar earned)

when market really crash e.g. sti around 2000 pt, then use the srs or cpf sa to buy the index.

okay, all these are low risk way liao

people will also recommend you buy index etf.

as of prices now, u can buy 2 lots of es3 (straits times index), 3 lots of a35 (bonds), ideally one more lot of bonds.to make a more conservative 60/40 style.

go google bogleheads, investmentmoats, turtleinvestor for more information

plz don't ask for stock picks on the internet... dont even ask it from ur friends who claim to be doing very well in the stock market...

u wan to invest, the first thing u must do is educate urself first. go look for online tutorials, go to the library and borrow some beginner guides and get urself familiar with the different investment avaliable for u (stocks, bonds, eft, index fund, etc), learn how to evaluate a company/stock, ask urself questions like "y should i buy this?", "when should i sell it?", "y did the price dropped 20%, should i hold it or sell?" ... and most importantly learn about urself... wat is ur risk tolerance? how long can u hold on to the investment? how much loss can u stomach? do u need that 10k in the foreseeable future? have u set aside an emergency fund?

onli commit ur money when u r able to ans the above questions.

Oil should be dropping some more till aro end of Feb.. or when it hit aro US$40+ per barrel. Don't think there is a need to rush in to buy these stocks.

Recommending it just becuase you own it may not be appropriate for TS. Within 3 months, it's already back to its price 3 years ago and there is no support. TS is a low risk type.

Thanks for the information guys. Is it wise to invest my money in companies like SMRT? because it seems to be quite stable and I can collect dividend every year also.

For ocbc 360, I believe that will be my first start. but need to have 50k then worth it right?

Can checkout this unit trust.
Bought this at 73c in September now at 80.4c.

Eastspring Investments Unit Trusts - Global Technology Fund

Their Top 10 Holdings

APPLE INC - 8.2%
MICROSOFT CORP - 5.5%
GOOGLE INC - 4.1%
GOOGLE INC - 4.0%
ORACLE CORP -3.7%
FACEBOOK INC -3.2%
CISCO SYSTEMS INC - 3.2%
SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO LTD - 2.8%
VISA INC - 2.6%
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES COR - 2.4%

In this case, should I go for the lead? (Which is apple) or go for Google? (because i believe Google will do well)
