But yeah I lowkey rolled my eye when I see GN comparing stock Zen 3 figures with stock Intel 12 gen figures, I don't think i've seen performance comparisons for Zen 3 OC'd and Intel 12th gen OC'd yet.

Yes, reviews will need to be more careful with benching now.

If you look at just the graphs, its like a 8P/8E/24T 12900K is much faster than a 16P/32T 5950x.... It does sounds really incredible that 12900K has far fewer P cores but still managed to be so much faster.... till you see that 5950x in the test has just a 105W TDP while the 12900X has 241W.

So, in reality the 5950x is running alot lower than its peak performance as a result of its 105W constrain. Although the 241W is just boost power, the ability to run it for unlimited period literally means its real TDP is 241W as long as board and cooler can handle.

Btw, I am really curious about what happens when they limit the 12900K to just 125W.

Br right, the jump should not have such a big difference. This is because the additional bandwidth is largely off-set by the much much higher latency. From what we have seen in the past (DDR-DDR4), latency plays a much bigger role than bandwidth.

Another thing I find it weird is that why is there such a big difference in the power consumption between DDR4 and DDR5? 12900K shows a 25W jump while 12600K is 15W.....

I am just guessing (wild guess) that 12900K with DDR5 is not running the same speed as DDR4.

what intel has done here is just make multicore enhancement, ie allow the cpu to boost indefinitely, part of the official spec. i believe mce enabled has been the default behaviour since coffee lake, and most tech reviewers leave it on when benching modern intel cpus. so what u see now with the 12th gen is no different from what we've been seeing for the past 3 years or so. hwu did also cover this when reviewing b560 mobos, when enforced power limits caused performance of cpus to decrease, but that was only because in reviews which this reduced performance is compared against, this behaviour of indefinite boosting was the default. yes, the "tdp" is misleading, but then again always has been. and yes, when mce was first announced, ppl also said it was cheating but look at where we are now.

The Turbo Boost thing is a refined form of auto-OC basically; some mobo manufacturers also made the boosting continuous for Intel's previous gen, Intel just made it official this time. Gamers Nexus's manually OC-ed 5950X pulls similar power figures in their 12900K review.

It's a fair win IMO. Intel have been very honest about the max power consumption; they published the wattage requirements front and centre. They were aiming for the outright performance crown for this round, and they got it. That's probably what matters to the target audience for 5950X/12900K level CPUs.

Now the ball's back in AMD's court to lower Zen 3 pricing, while they prepare their DDR5 Zen 4 for next year. Which is excellent news for consumers IMO.

what's the point of shooting blue camp or red camp. End of the day both are here to make profit for their shareholders. You don't get any benefit by supporting either side. Red suit your needs then take red lor. Blue suits then take blue lor. In this kind of situation, just look out for your own interest that's all..

I think there is no cheating here, just a difference in terms of priority. Intel die die wants to win back performance crown for years, so they’ve thrown power efficiency out the window. I am not sure if AMD kept power low by choice because they don’t own the fab, so have little control over the optimisation of the node for their chips. Also I feel the current chiller design is not suited for high power due to the small surface area limiting heat transfer. I am happy with existing AMD performance for the power that it uses.

Have not seen so many innovations on x86 desktop for past 10yrs e.g, DDR5, PCIE5, P&E core
And up to 8.3GHz on i9 OC... world records benchmarks...

Seriously, consumers aren't that "naive" to be cheated these days.... its a legitimate generational leaps... one of the best chips in 2021 behind the Apple M1 MAX.
