Why would you prefer a $12 sound card over onboard sound chip ? I believe that using a sound card is just like
having a delicate graphics card, for better performance.

The $12 indeed better than onboard, performance near to $100 asus sound card

Some dedicated sound cards are worse than onboard ones.
Make sure buy a dedicated sound card that has a better sound processor chip than your onboard one.

FYI when buying a sound card is not about price but the chipset itself.
Some Realtek onboard are decent, that Shopee soundcard uses C-Media sound card which
to me is not very good.

Creative have a cheap soundcard but it uses Realtek.

Take note there is no way that a $10 can match a $100 soundcard.
Some cheap sound uses software codec for sound, where as sound card like SB Z etc.
SB Z have dedicated DAC for better sound quality, SB control program you can do things
like EQ etc.

It's about performance, not quality since onboard soun chip also have quality sound but
lack of performane for games and multimedia. Just like onboard graphics which provide
quality graphics but low performance graphics due to the lack of gpu just like sound chip without spu.
They relies on cpu for processing.

That's not how it works
In a sound card, the focus is on reproducing good sound quality and you are primarily paying for the DAC (as the same suggests, the circuitry that converts digital to analog signals. The better the quality of components and design of the circuitry, the better signal to noise ratio blah blah). Whether you also introduce amplification via power amp, that's a different component and you pay for quality there as well.

In the case of the graphics card, the GPU unpacks and draws digital frames, and obviously you are paying for the output capacity/speed of frame generation etc. There is still a quality component eg 8 bit versus 10 bit, but this is a different consideration from DAC. The digital to analog conversion happens at the panel.

I'm using ifi idsd + hd600. I love headphone set ups. practical, don't disturb others, I use it everyday so the ROI is fantastic. I have a budget speaker set up but hardly turn it on. Once in a blue moon.

The bottom line is even cheaper game console system (cartridge & disc) have sound processor unit, it's a shame
that thousand dollars pc don't have.
