Any updates on the kids here? its been one year already.

Don't expect any updates.

some parents who are seeking advice usually will ghost others once people give advice cos how they bring up their kids is like "top secret".

kinda like the situation where the bloody classmate u had keeps saying, "no leh. I never study for exam one. I everyday play only."

but behind ur back, attend enrichment classes every single day, sleep 4hrs, tiger parents all the way.

then when they pull thru exams to get into a 4 pointer or 290 point sec school, instantly they don't know who u are.

Anyone has experience with speech delay for your kid?
My son is about 33 months old and can only say words like daddy, mummy, auntie, kor kor, ah ma, ah gong, where you, hot etc.

Poly referred him to kkh cos the doc say by this age shld be able to form a sentence.

Anyone got similar experience can share?

Mine has been seeing speech therapist since 24 months I think.
Homework for parents to do to encourage the child to speak.

Now about 30 months can speak "I want to eat apple please" sentence with encouragement. Also "bye" becomes "bye, see you." then becomes "bye, see you again."

Fantastic. So what next in the learning curve for your young one.
Have the SLT teach your child the following
a. extending the vocab. Eg using conjunctions or using colour as differentiation
b.Have the SLT teach you child about taking turns yet?

The W's questions are too hard. Those open ended questions required thinking/processing. Children with special needs already have problems comprehending. I recommend stick to conjunctions next and maybe colour associations.

I'm already bringing him to a recommended speech therapist by his pediatrician.

Agree, ped doctors will also ask the child with speech delay to go for ENT testing. There are lots of research on hearing challenges and speech delay.

My son learned to string simple sentences very early; probably around 18 months of age.

By contrast, my girl has been very slow to express herself. It wasn't until she was 3 years old when she can express herself in simple forms and only after reaching 4 years old, she has exploded in her vocab, narrative and talkativeness.

I was definitely concerned about her speech progress earlier, but I'm thankful that my PD was really experienced and comforted us that she would come out fine and we just have to give it time.

My 26 month old still babbles a lot during communication. Still uses non-verbal cues. However, when reading books, he can count 1 to 10 clearly, letters A to S and what the letter stands for up to D.

Sometimes he'll say the odd words here and there but it's all during his book reading time.

Brought him to a speech therapist when he was 22 months old for assessment. 1st session including assessment, total 1.5hrs = $270. Follow up was for an hour = $170.

The therapist cleared him from autism and said she was confident that my son was taking "his time" and should show improvements by 2.5 years. The good thing about the therapist is she constantly keeps in touch with me and gives me materials to read to engage the kid...at no cost.

I'm still monitoring him, will update as and when there's a new milestone or advice that might seem to be effective in accelerating his learning curve.

Good on you for taking your son to see a SLT. I know it is not cheap and I truly hope you son will show improvements. What did the assessment report say? Did the SLT mentioned anything about your son's
sensory and motor (movement) abilities? What sort of materials did the SLT share with you?

Accelerate the learning curve - tbh, is tough, Every child's performance is different. You said your SLT have given you materials to engage with your child. Do that.
Engagement could mean,
a. some role playing,
b. See if he understand about taking turns
c. See if he can comprehend what you want him to do.
d. Stretching his comprehension capability. (Eg, from saying give me a ball, to give me a yellow ball, and even stretching it put the yellow ball inside the green cup)

I have 2 special needs kids. The older one is autistic and the younger one is GDD (general developmental delay).

My suggestion to any parents with kids experiencing speech delays is to observe:
- does your child understand if you give them verbal instructions only? (Without body language or gesture)
- does your kids still tip toes a lot beyond 1.5 years?
- does your child have "empty" gaze most times or cannot maintain eye contact with you for more that 2 seconds?
- does your child has a strong finger grip? (Try sticking your index finger for them to hold and pull slowly, see how long they can hold on)

Usually for new parents (including myself back then), i only know my son cannot speak yet. But to an expert, they can see many red flags faster.

While waiting for referral appointment (which can take months), if money is not an object, i do recommend go to private center so they can do assessment & start early intervention / treatment.

Reason being is for any developmental issues, you are racing with time. Early intervention is most effective to start at 1-2 years old. If the child is older than 6-7 years old and still cannot talk, usually they will be muted for life.

We all hope that our kids will miraculously able to catch up with their age group, but better consider early intervention therapy just in case

Honestly, do not bang on hope.
Go private, see a SLT, and let them set out a EIP for you.
Not going to be cheap, I can tell you that. But the sooner you do it, the better it is for you and your wife's sanity.

Also MMR vaccines may impact learning for short period too

This MMR fallacy has been going on for many years. There is no evidence between MMR and autism.

My sister didn’t say many words till she turned 4 years old. Now she is 30 years old and doing well in life.

Some kids are late bloomers. Don’t worry too much.
