hi all,

I am currently still on cable and looking to switch to fiber. My main question is that with cable, I am using the access points already build into the different rooms, i.e my room. With fiber, the ONT is in the living room... is there anyway I can still make use of the access points, or to maintain wired connection, I literally have to lay cable from ONT to my room?

When you say "access points", do you mean coaxial point(s) in your room(s) or network LAN port(s) in your room(s)?

If there're network LAN port(s) in your room(s), of course you can still (continue to) use them after you switch from cable to fibre Internet.

If it's just coaxial point(s) in your room(s)...

Then IMHO, it's best to lay a cable(s) to your room(s). This is (just) a one time cost.

Some people will tell you to either:
(1) Buy & use powerline homeplugs OR
(2) Buy & use wireless bridge/repeaters OR
(3) Buy a new expensive high-end router with external antennas
- and hope the WiFi signal from the expensive high-end router can reach your room with good signal strength.

All above will also incur cost -- just like there is also cost to lay a cable(s) to your room(s).

But the most important thing is...
Lay cable will give you the most reliable, stable & fast network performance compared to all the other options.

Hope this helps.

My ont was flashing a red "LOS" light. So, reported to starhub cso and was advised some charges on service and transportation. technician visited and concluded its NLT (or OpenNet?) issue, waived service fee but kept transport fee.

starhub charges transportation fee $12+ per service visit. is this newly implemented?

I feel its unfair when this is not customers fault/issue. I had the same fault last year and there were no charges for the service call and fault rectification...

Yeah...the coaxial points. Thanks for the advice.

Worst ISP ever.

I got the intermittent disconnection issue again yesterday. Seems like they haven't rectified it after so many years. Did some troubleshoot and managed to get that out of the way. So tested some servers and realized the international speed went down the drain. USA latency spiked to 480ms. Proceed to run a few local speedtests and got dismal results of 200+ download speed. Called in to their tech support and got the usual "no issue with their network" reply, and was asked to send in speedtest results and wait for callback.

Same issue with both their Fibre and Cable broadband. So it is not the equipment, this is clearly an issue with their network, bandwidth or whatever it may be. I'm convinced this is a poorly run network with incompetent tech support staff. Silver lining is i am coming to the end of my contract.

Thinking about MR or VQ. Anybody have any comments good or bad about these 2?

Now more people are reporting same issue on facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/StarHub/

Called in and was told nothing wrong with their network. Their support staff know nothing beyond asking you to send in screencaps of traceroutes. Big joke of a company.

Their service reliability and support is by far the worst of the traffic light ISPs.

Worst ISP ever.

I got the intermittent disconnection issue again yesterday.

If you've never done this before, login to your router & set DNS settings to use (any) 3rd party DNS.

This just means you switch to using other DNS instead of using Starhub's own DNS.

Personally, I set DNS settings in my router to use OpenDNS -- https://use.opendns.com/

After saving DNS settings, you may need to reboot your router for the new DNS settings to take effect.

If never done before, the above may help (a lot).

Same issue with both their Fibre and Cable broadband.

I've Starhub cable Internet. It's working OK for me. No problems. See a previous post I made in another HWZ thread:

I've Starhub cable Internet 100Mbps.

I'm using the Cisco DPC3925 cable modem -- set to bridge mode.

I'm using the DIR-868L router, under DNS settings using OpenDNS -- https://use.opendns.com/
(I NEVER ever use Starhub's own DNS)

I've no problem with general Internet usage.

I CONSTANTLY get 90+Mbps - 100Mbps when doing speedtests at:
http://www.speedtest.net/?a=1

I can get 90+Mbps - 100Mbps on BOTH wired & wireless speedtests.

I can watch 4K Youtube absolutely no problem.

Hope the above helps.

Thanks, people here actually provide better help than those clueless bunch sitting on Starhub's support desk.

It isn't an issue with the DNS, i have ditched Starhub's default DNS long ago. You probably won't notice the poor connection with normal surfing. Try sending pings or mtr to overseas IPs and you will see horrendous numbers on quite a few routes. At this time i am getting 400+ms to a few US sites. Same for the cable test, so it is down to their network.

Even more mysterious is the bandwidth that i am getting, until i called in this week, it was exactly half of my 500 subscribed plan. I suspect there are more of my cases around, so check your bandwidth and make sure you are getting what you paid for.

Don't bother doing any kind of troubleshoot. I asked a friend to help me to trace a few IPs on another ISP and the numbers were normal. I double checked on maplatency.com and true enough, the latency via VQ was normal while on Starhub the number was double. Same issue on their cable network.

You won't be able to stream any videos with such latency and speed. So don't bother trying. They still have not got back to me regarding this, it is now way over 24hrs.

There is a OpenDNS@FamilyShield under Parental Control.
Do save the settings and perform a reboot/restart the router.

Next, on your pc do perform a the below 3 steps to flush away the previous dns settings after the router is up and running :
1. ipconfig /release
2. ipconfig /flushdns
3. ipconfig /renew

Latency to test Quadranet IPs were 160-180ms with M1 and Singtel. Didn't test MR or VQ.

With Starhub, the number is 500+ms. So there you go if you are trying to stream content from Netflix etc or gaming and found the line or video quality unacceptable.

Pings to some other USA IPs are just slightly higher but if you attempt to download anything or perform any task, you will find that the speed is less than half of what it normally is.

It isn't back to normal. I ran some tests yesterday night and it appears that some routes were ok. This morning however, the latency and speed are now back to where they were, lots of lost packets and speed is down the drain.

From Friday until this morning their tech support has asked me for nothing more than the usual traceroutes. The issue is clear as daylight and they don't even want to knowledge it. Complete incompetency on their part. Tests were done from M1, Singtel, a 3rd part Starhub test and from their cable internet. All results point to their network being the problem source.

For those doing anything more than the normal youtube streaming, emails and taobao surfing, i will save you time and trouble looking for your next ISP, just give this junk of a company the miss. You can try your luck with them but i can almost guarantee that you will regret it.

At least not that bad compare to few days back.
The network technically unusable

Had done random test ping to lazada.sg just now
Roughly 8% packet drop out of 36 ping packets

spot on. I got sick of their spotty connections and evening/peak hour throttling so much so that I paid the penalty of 500 bucks and switched to VQ. never been happier since. Streaming has been much more stable than before - even my Wife, an IT newb notices the better experience on VQ.

shame on you Starhub.

anyone having issues today,
the internet would work for a short moment, then fail, then work for awhile then fail again. The cycle has been continuing for the entire day today.

I had the intermittent connection issue few days ago and did a ping test with CMD under run. "ping 8.8.8.8 -n 100" and there will be packets lost. Called the technician and told the problem and fixed within few hours.
