Starhub MaxMobile Lite plan

Hi all,

Is anyone a customer of the Starhub MaxMobile Lite data plan?
Basically, you pay S$19.90 monthly and you get 6 GB data every month.

1) Does this plan come with a phone?

2) If I'm using this plan mostly just for WhatsApp, is it easy to exceed the 6 GB per month? Maybe say, send out 20 - 30+ WhatsApp messages per day or so.
I assume if I watch youtube on this plan, the 6 GB will be used up within a week?

3) How does one monitor the data left per month? Is there an app for this?

I am not a customer of this plan, but I made inquiries so I can tell you this much.

1) No phone or device. By right, this plan is designed for data ONLY (no call, but you can get SMS). So it's designed for use with "USB mobile broadband device" or "MiFi device", not phones. But of course, when you subscribe you just get a SIM card and you can put this in your phone.

Again, StarHub CS told me you can get/send SMS (sending 5c per message block) but no incoming or outgoing calls.

2) WhatsApp has very low data usage. Unless you upload and download a LOT (and I do mean A LOOOOT) of videos through WhatsApp you are unlikely to exceed even 500 MB per month on WhatsApp. And WhatsApp has great video compression.

You're right that YouTube does use a lot of data if you use it too much, but 6GB should be generous enough for some 10-20 videos per week. Unless you're going to watch videos every time you use your phone, you're not going to exceed 6GB. Besides, SH offers data add-on at less than $5 per GB, something NO OTHER telco offers.

I believe there is a MyStarhub app that can help track the usage, but not sure if it will work with this plan. Of course, you can also use "Data Usage" under Settings in your phone to track although it may not match the billed data usage.

Btw, it's a 3G only plan. If you need 4G, you need to fork out another $10 for MaxMobile Elite 6GB plan (going at $30). And there was a promotion for this $19.90 plan last time I checked. They don't have it anymore? It was down to $14.95 I think.

Don't go for "authorized retailer"... just go to StarHub direct coz they will give you exactly what you want, not try to sell you what you don't want (like the $30 package). The $19.90 package (now going on a discount at $14.93 grab it while you still can) is MaxMobile Lite 6GB 3G only plan. The $30 one is 4G plan (you pay $10 more for 4G speed, but data bundle is same 6GB).

You don't need to care about the MaxMobile number if you're going to get another prepaid for calls/SMS. Because the MaxMobile is for data only, nobody needs to know its number. You don't need to share it with anyone, don't need to memorize it or use it for any service. It can be anything, doesn't matter.

You only need to share your other prepaid number with your contacts so they can call/SMS you on the prepaid number. This is the important number you need to memorize, and set your WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat, bank accounts, etc to and this is your primary contact number.

The MaxMobile number is just a throwaway number for the SIM you are using to get internet, so just don't care about that number.

If your monthly usage is around 2GB or less, you can try ST prepaid as you can get both data and call/SMS on one SIM (instead of getting data on postpaid plan, you just buy weekly data bundle and stack it up.. all details in the other long thread!). I'm doing this now.

NOTE that with StarHub postpaid MaxMobile, there is a one-time cost of $48.15 (consists of SIM activation of $37.45 and one-time registration fee of $10.70). Idk why these telcos want to charge such hefty fees for everything on postpaid. All these are totally free on prepaid (the value you buy is all inside for you to use, and you don't pay anything more)!

Ok, I just signed up for the MaxMobile Lite 6GB plan.
I can't understand what the Pinoy agent was saying (only understood 40% of it), so I want to clarify here again.

So now, I've 2 SIM cards (and thus 2 phone numbers) :

1st number: this is the existing prepaid card which I'm using all these while, and this number is tied to my WhatsApp and everything.

2nd number: this is the new SIM card I got today when I signed up for the MaxMobile Lite plan

Question is:
When do I tell my phone to use the old number and when to use the new one?

Like how do I tell my phone to use the prepaid SIM card when I'm calling / receiving calls, and when to use the MaxMobile Lite SIM card when surfing web / using apps / whatsapp?

Because if I continue surfing the web and using whatsapp on my old number, then all the charges will be deducted from my $18 prepaid card right?

Just set the SIM card to the 1st line on a normal, average day. Using calls and sms, like a normal hp.

Only when you need to check ur whatsapp, you switch to 2nd line. Even though ur whatsapp is using ur prepaid number (1st Line) but the software itself is in ur phone/device, thus it just need to get connected to 3G (ie. ur 2nd Line) and u will be able to use ur whatsapp without using credit from the $18 prepaid.

This depends on your phone model. The idea dual-SIM phone will have permanent settings to say "use this SIM for call/SMS, and that SIM for data" and you don't need to "switch" between the two - the phone will automatically use the correct SIM for the correct type of use. See ykgoh's link. Quite helpful.

If your dual-SIM phone has one SIM slot for 2G only, I suggest you use it for your primary SIM calls/SMS only since 2G is enough for quality calls and SMS. Put the data SIM in the 4G/3G/2G combined SIM slot to get better data speeds.

Do note that even though the data is on your second SIM, your primary contact number is the first SIM and this is the number you should tell your friends and register WhatsApp, Viber, etc with. It doesn't mean these apps will use the first SIM data, it just means your friends can find you on these apps using your primary contact number.

Depends on ongoing promotion. I think SingTel will waive if you sign up for postpaid online.

Maybe better call/SMS rates from one operator/plan or want to keep postpaid call/SMS line (with prepaid data). And better data rates from another operator/plan or want to keep postpaid data (with prepaid call/SMS).

I thought about doing that at first, but later decided against it because 2 SIMs = need to hunt for dual SIM phone, need to maintain their top ups, and/or contracts, etc.. more hassle. In the end I decided on a single SIM. SingTel hi! prepaid, works well for me so far.
