i just purchase the Jonsbo N1 case for my DIY NAS and my usage for NAS are Plex and file sharing for family and also a local sync to small cloud storage for important documents.
I also intend to rip all my 4K collection as I'm tired of some 4K disc always not working
I also might intend to run 2-3 VMs but haven't really decide on it yet.

May I ask if Intel Gen 14 current might still have potentially defective chips around ?
May I check if Transcend DDR5 4800 32GB is suitable ?
Can I get a better casing fan as it seems some people get ARCTIC P12 or P14 which I don't seem to find it locally ?
Any use case for a GPU card ?

Case: Jonsbo N1 (arriving next week)

CPU: Intel Gen 14 i5 14500

MB: ASUS ROG STRIX B760-I GAMING WIFI M-ITX - D5
or GIGABYTE B760I AROUS PRO - DDR5 (M-ITX)

Memory: Transcend DDR5 4800 32GB (reuse)

Storage:
Kingston SSD 480GB or Samsung SSD 830 256GB ( lying somewhere in the drawer, hope can be use)
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVME (reuse)

Seagate IronWolf NAS 12 TB x 5

Power Supply:
CORSAIR SF750 750W 80+Plantinum SFX ATX3.0 PCIE5(7YRS)

OS: TruseNas

I will avoid 14th Gen if I can. I will either go with Intel 11th/12th Gen, N series for lower end system, or just an AMD AM4/AM5 (with PBO off) + GPU setup for my DIY NAS. An 8C/16T AMD CPU is really good as a DIY NAS with lots of room for running apps and VMs.

It is your motherboard that decides Memory compatibility (and capacity). You can check on the mobo QVL list. Normally, if you want maximum capacity (Eg, 32GB) and run all 4 DIMMs stable, you choose a "workstation/server" motherboard. (Eg. Asrock Rack, Supermicro, Asus Pro-Art series, Gigabyte Enterprise)

Can I get a better casing fan as it seems some people get ARCTIC P12 or P14 which I don't seem to find it locally ?

I can't see why not? I use Noctua for noise sensitive areas and Deltas for my server room. You can check out Taobao.

A possible use case could be for "HW transcoding". For example, if your media source is 4K, you can still easily let the CPU stream 4K content to your media player or mobile devices connected to your home network or another "home" over VPN/reverse proxy. But if you want to stream "on-the-go", like on your mobile devices when connected to mobile 4G network (which is very much subjected to mobile coverage/reception), with limited bandwidth, you might want to compress the 4K movie on-the-fly to 1080p/720p in order to stream to your mobile devices.

This works the same way like streaming services like Netflix/D+, which you watched on your mobile devices, except you are hosting your (own) streaming services/server (Eg, PLEX, Jellyfin, etc). A GPU supporting HW transcoding is so much faster and could handle multiple streams without taxing your CPU much. I have been streaming this way to my family and extended family over a GTX1660 Super for quite a while now. I even stream my media over PLEX when I am traveling overseas/family vacation....

Thanks for sharing, I will then go with AMD Ryzen 7000 CPU and a GPU card(maybe Nvidia T400) as I'm not really a fan of Intel.

For "with PBO off", usually on a desktop/laptop it's done on BIOs level, how does it gets turn off for NAS ?

Yes the mobo QVL list doesn't seem to support Transcend memory, Will look at the other memory. I don't intend to go server motherboard as I had this piece of Transcend memory lying around so i thought if I could make use of it.

Yes Noctua is really good and I will look it on taobao.

What better place to post this than a ZFS Cult thread like TrueNAS? ZFS, ZFS, ZFS! Showing my support to Tom from Lawrence Systems and his dedication to open-source and educating more with his tech tutorials on YouTube. Mainly just because I'm also a cult and nerd for ZFS.... :ROFLMAO:

**TrueNAS Fangtooth RC 25.04 – What’s New, What’s Breaking**

The RC is usually pretty stable. Home-labers could Just give it a try and contribute to the bug reporting. Anytime can revert back to the older version from the OS boot settings.

For those interested in virtualising storage, especially using XCP-ng+XO. You can simply pass through the storage controller (xcp-ng ver.8.3) without installing the XO drivers. However, I still strongly do not recommend it for production. But for fun and testing, hey, why not?

**TAKE NOTE: Time to Move Off TrueNAS Core**
Tom from Lawrence Systems on how you could move onto TrueNAS Scale from Core and what you should look out for, just remember to backup, backup, backup if you are still running the very old and legacy pool encryption on TN core.

Just in case you are still on TN Core, you should plan to move on to TrueNAS Scale. It is not that TN core is EOL but there will not be any more new features planned for it, Eg ZFS expansion, etc. I have moved to TrueNAS Scale for all my production and homelab storage systems since last year. Except for some clients that have a more complex system, Eg, with running production 24/7 VMs or remote VMs running directly on their storage servers. When I have some time, I might redo the guides using TrueNAS Scale in the future.

Anyone tried installing TrueNas on the new UGreen NAS boxes?

I think you can easily find quite a few tutorials on YouTube. (Eg. NASCompares, Tek Syndicate)

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

It should work like any other DIY NASes running TrueNAS.

**GOOD WATCH: Perfect Media Server (DIY NAS) Series from Alex of KTZ System Channel (also Tailscale Advocate)**

Check out the Perfect Media Server (DIY NAS) series from Alex of KTZ System YouTube Channel, who is also the "Tailscale Advocate" or Head of Developer Relations at Tailscale. Alex provided lots of tips to build your own DIY NASes and the hardware parts which you want to pay extra attention to when building one. A good and informative watch 2-part YT series.

**MAINTENANCE UPDATE: TrueNAS Community Edition 25.04.1**
Seemed to be "update season" lately. Anyway, for those who updated their TrueNAS Scale 24 to the CE version 25.04, this is a maintenance release and includes refinements and fixes for issues discovered after 24.04.0. This update will eventually pave the way for the "upcoming" (not yet arrived) per App IPs like we use to have for TrueNAS Core. Want to read up more can check out the release notes for this update here:

**TUTORIAL: Setting Up Per-APP IP Address on TrueNAS CE 25.04.1**
For those like me who set up different IPs for their different hosted apps/services on TrueNAS Core in the past, you will be looking forward to setting this up on the new TrueNAS CE. This feature is back and easier to configure than ever before. You will still go through the "bridge" set up. Take note that if you want to set up the different VLAN IP addresses for that particular app, instead of selecting the "interface" on the bridge settings (like the YT video), just simply select the VLAN of choice and create the static IP you would like to use under the "Aliases". Under the "host IP" of the app you are configuring, just select the static IPs (Aliases) from the drop-down list and save.

Example: Setting up a server (PLEX) under VLAN20 with an exclusive IP address of 192.168.20.87:
Step 1:
For users who want to set a VLAN IP address "Per-APP", under "Network" when configuring the bridge (br20) just simply select the VLAN of choice and create the static IP you would like to use under the "Aliases" as shown below. Make sure when you are creating the VLAN (vlan20), you do not set an IP address for it.
iLEdjuT.png

STEP 2: Under the "host IP" of the app (in this example, PLEX) you are configuring, just select the static IPs (Aliases) from the drop-down list and save.

**SHARING: [Beelink ME Mini] A mini and low-powered PC which supports up to 6x M.2 slots for building your DIY NAS**

Unboxing the Beelink ME Mini. A good choice for home users looking to run a mini and low-powered DIY NAS on any NAS OS (TrueNAS) when building a small network or a homelab. Support up to 6x M.2 NVME, which is easily available nowadays and comes equipped with an Intel N150, 12GB memory, 64GB eMMC and 2x 2.5GbE (would be perfect with Intel 10G!).

Got the gun metal grey version instead of the white. The eMMC could easily load the operating system of your choice. Or even as a mini Proxmox server running containers with PCIE passthrough to ZFS on TrueNAS (VM) as a storage backup.
