i'm not too sure about ahci mode.. i will ask him but what if it is not in ahci mode?

Essentially, the mode must be selected prior to installation. It cannot be changed after installation. The system may not boot.

So, if you are not in AHCI during installation on your own computer and later you change it, the system will not boot.

Same if you friend install in AHCI in his comp and you computer is in IDE, it will not boot, and vice versa.

There's a registry hack for it thou.. if that is really the case.

is the 30s and 15s measuring the same thing? from which start point of booting? from cold start, 30s is alright, the 15s you read may be BootRacer timings, which is not from cold boot. why don't you try BootRacer and show us your timing?

hi bro, my 30 secs is right from the beginning of my startup.

meaning i start my own timing once i see wordings on my monitor.

yes i saw 15s is based on other forumer's results from bootracer.

your bootup is pretty normal then, nothing to worry about. bootracer's "time to desktop" is essentually from Windows starting to complete loading.

Fresh install of Windows 7 on Crucial m4 SSD yield 16 second bootup time.

However, after installing all the relevant Windows update and Service Pack 1, boot time increased to 21 second. This remained after I tried clearing off update files and whatnot. Dont know what caused the 5 second "penalty"

ssd doesn't need defrag i think :o

windows 7 shld have TRIM enabled for SSD.. that one will take care of the ssd lifespan i guess?

hhaha not sure :s13:

i think defrag SSD will just reduce it's lifespan since there are limited writes per cell... and it'll not bring ANY benefits since SSDs doesn't spin... keeping the data "together" doesn't benefit at all...

enjoy your ssd.

1. never defrag ssd drives. it will shorten the lifespan.

2. never use it for BT. it will shorten the lifespan.

3. run trim once a month. questional benefit. i installed my ssd with winxp pro since 2011 jan. never run trim ever. doesnt seem to decrease performance of my ssd. then again, i only use up 20gb out of 120gb of my ssd.

The benefit of trim will only be evident when the SSD is almost full or all the NAND have been written at least once, when garbage collection operation is necessary.

Windows 7 support trim natively, so there is no need to "run" it manually. Everytime a file is deleted, the OS will notify the SSD that the data is no longer needed.

Was thinking of installing 64gb as boot for winxp but was fearful since no trim. Hows the performance so far? Current pc working so don't wanna spend to upgrade just for ssd and xp is stable.
