get an intel ssd 40Gb for boot drive. quiet, fast, small and light.

I'll never go back to mechanical drives again if i don't need the space.

the most noise part in my PC is my spinning hdd now.

actually we dun really nid ssd though. They are vr exp if u compare ssd's cost/gb vs hdd cost/gb. since someone quoted that prices of ssd's raw material wont go down, seem like this technology wont be cheap and will soon be replaced with smth else. if your hdds are vr noisy (if only you find 'em noisy) buy hdd silencers. they will somehow help abit. buy ssd's only if you need the speed. but srsly, those 40gb-160gb speeds are not say vr fast. unless you can afford those ocz pci-e ssds that can give 1GB/s speeds, dun bother buying them.
However, this is just my personal thought, if you still insist on zero noise, ssds are still the best choice

nah.. with $200-300 to buy a device that lets u boot within 20-30 sec... where program start up 2x faster... where all my post booting programs all run within like few sec.... where tear n wear is less and can avoid common HDD failure resulting in OS reinstallation.. its all worth it!!

u buy SSD not to store data.. but to store OS and most commonly used program. My MP3, photos, Video is stored in a HDD still ofcos..

with that storage HDD not hving the OS .. and not in need to hv it spinning everytime boot up will also help to prolong the live (hopefully!)

seriously, SSD is the best thing for me in computing experience so far... the speed boost for $300 is amazing.. I didnt even upgrade my PC, just OS and SSD itself and the speed gain I got is much more then anything I could spent with $300 ($450 if incl Win7)

hi,
i m very interested in getting a ssd for my laptop but i dont know wat kind to get,got different sized one with diff connectivity options right for diff ssds.i dont want to open up my laptop just to check on the hhd,scared something will happen.Looking for something above average n affordable as well with warranty for just in case[optional],around 120gb to 160gb,originally thought of getting the intel x25 since theres one which just came out in the 120GB sizing but not sure if it would be suitable,n i guess its within my means to get but just read that the intel ssds r considered average,so how n apparently theres going to be a new intel ssd coming out soon?will ssd reduce the heat emission n increase batt life for laptops,read some stuff online but its not really concrete stuff,can confirm,i m using dell studio xps 16 btw

cost per gb doesn't matter. first thing to think: e.g. do you need 200gb? if not, why not spend less and get 100gb which is all u need? storage is like this, if not used, then wasted.

e.g. i need 40gb and i pay 150 for it. to me, it is not that expensive.

yah.. u r right.. if u not into gaming or not installing lots of program.. no need too big

I got 120gb and left with 85gb so far only.. What I have is:
-Win7
-Word
-anti-virus
-usual stuff like broswer+photoscape+email (1gig incl attachment)

So if u ask me.. a 80gig is sufficient to many ppl.. esp those not playing a lot of games at the same time..

Most SSD are 2.5", suitable for use in notebooks. Connection is standard using SATA. Basically you can use any ssd you see in the market. Just remove your current hdd and put in SSD. But before this, have your windows dvd ready, you need it to install windows from scratch.

Depending on the type of SSD, most won't reduce heat emission or increase battery life. You can check the power consumption of individual hdd/sdd from their website.

There are 2 types of people who say SSD is not worth:

1. Those who never use ssd before.
2. Those who use first generations ssd with lousy chipset like jmicron and refuse to to accept any new ssd.

don't touch SSD, u will never know how fast it is so u won't have the urge to buy

if u get online , its like $350 for 120G

but say u buy 80G which is really sufficient to many .. I think in spore u can get that for $280 now or even less ? and if order USA online its even cheaper.

i know $/MB is high.. but its really the best upgrade a PC can get in terms of $/performance

now vertex 2 120GB selling at $40x . cant remember the actual price liao . with warranty, i guess its worth it bah.

i'm left with 44GB on the 120GB

If getting Intel SSD, local prices are ok.

If getting OCZ or G Skill, check out the prices at Newegg, Amazon or Linke.
Usually at least 25% cheaper there.
