Storage upgrade advise

Hi guys, need some advise. My old 250gb SSD seems to be failing soon, thinking to get a nvme which seems to be the only option. My board is an Asrock B460 Steel Legend which i understand to run with gen 3 nvme. Will the gen 4 be compatible to run? For eg. Samsung EVo 990 or WD SN850X. I know it won't get speed of gen 4 but makes no sense to get a used gen 3. Looking at either a 1 or 2 TB to run OS.

Also which 8-10TB hdd is reliable nowadays? WD blue seems to be unreliable. My 4TB green of 8 years is still in great health compared to my blue which only lasted 5 years and went dead

You can get Samsung 980 (non-pro) gen 3 or Samsung 970 EVO Plus if you can find one.
Samsung EVo 990 plus or Lexar NM790 gen 4.
But since this mobo only support gen 3 so these SSD won't be able to tap
on it's full bandwidth of up to 7000mb/s.

You can get but you won't tap on the full speed of the SSD.
8TB onwards HDD depend on the model, avoid blue or Seagate barracuda line.
Try to get at least NAS grade like Seagate Ironwolf will be better

Higher price but NAS grade HDD will have better endurance than consumer grade.

Thank you for the advise. I’ve looked around, seems buying the gen4 seems more realistic. Used gen3 etc being priced so close to gen4, wonder why.

for storage, normal desktop can run those NAS hdd like normal? Trying to see which ones are more value to buy. Eg wondering to buy 2 x 6TB 3.5” or a single 10/12TB. Just worried if hdd dead everything gone

You can easily find either Crucial T500 or WD 850X 1TB going for around S$105-110. Both good for OS drive.

No. P3 is QLC. I would much rather get Lexar nm710 for a slower and more reliable TLC drive. Probably cheaper too.

so far i havent had any dying on me and i think i got like 7-8pcs all from different manufacturers lol

Get Lexar NM790 4TB around $378.
The Lexar will totally trash the P3 plus.

last dec i got was this for my elder boy

dun really think either of us will feel the difference between a higher or lower grade nvme ssd
its not really like a jump in performance from the sata to nvme

I got a couple keep bluescreen that I chunk it away.

For SSD try to get reliable brand, Crucial, Lexar, Samsung etc. Will be OK.

And over amazon i not too worried about rma
and its still working ok til now

So long if you are using as data drive than ok.
OS drive is no like I shared it will bluescreen randomly.

Acer SSD is not sold locally that one only through online.

Usage also affects SSD wear and tear especially when you play online games which have lots of read and write.

How ex can a NVMe be now that you are concerned over pricing? A good NVMe with good controller goes a long way.
