I am interested in Doing a Law Diploma or Law Degree also, currently 30+, will be graduating with a accounting cert soon. I start to get interested in Law probably because of my previous job and while studying Business Law for accounting.

But my grades for my Business Law sucks big time.. I put in quite a amount of effort. My english subject is always my weak spot, getting a C5 for O level, the rest of my subjects were distinction.

Anyone has any recommendation/ approach to study law subjects? Good memories to remember the case law? Is what u study in the school useful in work?

Anyone of u know of anyone with law degree doing taxation? how is it? thks thks

a C5 for english is horrible.. you should really work at your english if u want to be a lawyer..

If your English is weak, you will suffer in law. By reading what you just wrote, I can see many errors in your English expression. Mine is not perfect either, but I can cope. My torts book is so thick and I can knock someone out on the head with it. So really consider law not because of the prestige or glory, rather whether you can excel in it. Anyway, if you do law, the lecturers will give you tips on how to look at a case etc. So you don't have to worry.

hi guys, i'm actually torn between monash law and melbourne's commerce. However, i'm more prone towards reading law. any idea how i can prepare for law school? Those that have been there? What skills are required to succeed in law?

So what have you chosen? I would suggest you do combined law degree at Monash. I'm not sure whether you can just do straight law at Monash.

Oh, I'm flying back to Sydney in a few weeks to start my commerce/law course at USyd. So excited!

It really depends which 'Approved by Singapore' university you are going to. The Law Board states you have to be top 30% aka 2nd lower honours and above. If you are going to the approved Murdoch University, it should be damn easy to get top 30%.

Whereas if you go to top tier universities like Melb University, UNSW or USyd, it's going to be hell hard. You have to compete literally with the brightest local kids in the state who are more opinionated, better in English and definitely will grasp the law concepts better than you. So even though Australia is a relaxed country, the student competition in law and medicine courses in the best universities would be very high. USyd even has a law exchange with Harvard University which is cut-throat competition to get into.

And a foreign education at a top university like USyd sets the foundation for you to work as a lawyer in Australia and anywhere else. Saying it does not train you enough to handle SG is untrue, because even when you come back to Singapore, you still have to take a diploma in Singapore law. Thus, it does set allow you to understand the laws here.

In addition, foreign education is good not all bad, it allows you to see the world as it is, if you can afford it. I personally never went through the O Level/A Level stages in Singapore, but compared to my other Singaporean secondary school friends who did, I am in a much better position than them.

Best way to memorise cases is repetition and thorough understanding. Having bullet points of the important bits of the case would help in memorising.

TS, you should go ahead and pursue in your law degree as it is your interest. It doesn't matter if you will graduate later. As long as you are happy and live life without regrets! As for taking private A levels, I would prefer you not to. Hope it helps! Just a comment here.

Can someone give me an idea on how tough competition will be like for the 20 vacancies in NUS 3-year graduate LLB course?

I called up NUS admissions but they refused to tell me the number of applicants they have for these 20 spots.

Does anyone know if there's a definite cut-off point? Say, if your gpa is <3.6 you will "automatically" be rejected a seat etc etc? The criteria to get in to this course is rather ambiguous...

If your gpa is < 3.6, you won't even be granted an interview or have chance to even see the test paper for the selection test. Been there, done that.

samanthalee: gosh. don't they even take into account say, your professors' academic reference? So it's like an unwritten rule that people with GPA <3.6 don't even make the cut at all?

shouldn't they post it clearly on their website... giving people false hopes. haha.

Dunno what was inside my academic reference, cuz the profs were instructed to seal it and sign across the envelope flap. I was very low key during undergrad days, so maybe my profs also dunno what to write.
My GPA was between 3.55-3.59 (can't remember exact, only remember if round up is 3.6).

I am but a single example, maybe there are others who got in with < 3.6. You never know until you try.

But taking reference from UK universities' LLB graduate entry, all of which call for at least a 2:1 honours, so probably NUS would require a second upper too.

old thread brought up for some strange reason, but i beg to differ with the above.
FYI, law is just but another course in australia, and it actually have a rather low cut off entry for local students. Law is not a lucrative profession in australia.
For eg, to get into med undergrad u need an ATAR of 99% ( which means, u are in the top 1% of ur cohort in each state, plus u must sit a UMAT) whereas, for law, it's something like 90% to 95% depending on the uni. Which for fyi, certain course like nutrition have ATAR of 95%, computer sci 92% et..cutoff which are much higher than Law.

If you want to join SPF as PO, study a Poly Dip or GCE A to get a SGT rank for entry level.

If you want to join SPF as SO, get a 2nd upper Hons degree to get the ASP rank for entry or 2nd lower Hons/Bach degree with the rank of Insp for entry level.

A Pte Dip is not recognize at Dip level & you will start from CPL base on your GCE O/ITE cert.
