Hi, I am undecided in whether or not I should pursue a degree in SUSS, or in Australia. Since I intend to take up an honours, I will be presenting all duration in terms of how long it will take to get an honours degree. I have been accepted into SUSS marketing (4 years honours), University of Western Australia's Bachelor of Commerce (2.5 years honours) and University of Melbourne (3 years honours).
Some context: First of all, I am open to continue working in Australia, after uni but I expect myself to be coming back to Singapore to work. Also, I'm guessing it may be better if I intend to apply for an Australian PR (just if I intend to migrate in the future) but it doesn't really affect my decision. As for tuition fees, I do give some consideration to them, but all three are affordable. I also intend to pursue a masters, but I think I'll leave that matter for another day.
So here are my views towards each university:
1) SUSS
- Pros: its a significantly cheaper but longer option. Also I feel like there is an impression in Singapore's society that a local degree will grant a higher starting pay and employability, if taking into account that I will score the same for each university. Furthermore, as employers nowadays are looking at a more holistic experience, I think that SUSS's focus on social work may prove helpful in employment. As for the modules, they all seem to be quite interesting.
- Cons: Since it is still a fairly new school, it is hard to say what the employer's impression are of SUSS. That makes it rather difficult on what to expect when entering the workforce. Also, I've heard that it is hard to do well in the course (the average CGPA being about a second lower or a third class), despite putting in the effort, which isn't too good to hear. Reason given is that since SUSS has become an autonomous university, it has to raise its standard of marking (basically the jizz of it, don't wanna go too much into detail). I'm pretty sure that would give an impression to employers that SUSS students aren't very promising so that diminishes the chances of employability. I've also heard that the teachers there aren't very good.
Conclusion: So is it worth it to pay lesser tuition fees, but study longer and get a not so good GPA? (I'm just taking the average, gotta be realistic)
2) UWA
- Pros: it is the fastest of the 3 options to complete an honours degree. This will give me more time in the sense where I am able to either start working earlier or more time to gain experience through internships. I'm, also very keen on the overseas experience and although it is not cheap, it is still of a manageable cost. I'm also more confident that I will be able to score better in an Australian Uni (at least a second upper).
- Cons: The business school in UWA is not say very recognised as compared to UOM. So the question here is why study at a less recognised school if I'm offered to study at a more reputable one. (basically the only con being that the degree is not so reputable)
Conclusion: Is it worth it to score well and study shorter, pay an okay tution fee (willingly), but for a degree that is less recognised?
3) UOM
- Pros: The Melbourne business school is very reputable in Australia, and far more recognised as compared to UWA. As for its comparison with SUSS, it is hard to say because SUSS is still new. Still possibly the best business school in australia from a Singaporean viewpoint. Still think I am able to do better in an Aussie Uni than in SUSS.
- Cons:The only con would be that the cost to study there are, I calculated, 40k more expensive than UWA (which is a considerable amount).
Conclusion: Is it worth it to pay 40k more for a more reputable degree? (the extra 0.5 years as compared to UWA doesn't really bother me)
As said earlier, starting pay and employability do matter to me, but so does having an overseas experience. However, I also feel that there is a stigma among Singaporeans that aussie universities are for students who can't get into local ones, so I'm guessing that may affect the starting pay and employability too.
As much as I would like to save the money and study in SUSS, the cons are pretty considerable. Thus it is hard for me to tell which university will give me a better prospect in the future. Any opinions/advices?
