Yes you are right. Gliding allow you to rest or pause your stroke while your body is still moving..... thus save you energy. I think the Total Immersion method teaches alot on this.
Gilding for all the strokes are possible. Not only apply to breast or front crawl.

Just stumble upon this thread when googling on how to improve swimming. This is great! took the whole morning to burn through 50 over pages. Well done on TS on giving advice on how to swim better.
I notice there are discussions on whether people with higher fat ratio / body weight can swim or float better. While I dun have the answer, I can share my own case.
I have always enjoy swimming casually all my years. However 3 months ago, I realised my blood pressure had gotten to the point that I require medication. I decided to lose some weight to bring my blood pressure down. My bio stats are as below 3 months ago.
Age : 35
Gender : Male
Weight 102kg
Waist : size 38
40 laps(50m) continuous timing : 60 mins (very slow!)
My preferred style of swimming is Freestyle as I really suck at Breaststroke. I never had any issue swimming long distance in this style and I always have wondered whether is it because I float better due to my high fat content. Anyway I can go for 40 laps at a steady consistent slow speed @ 60 mins.
Present
Weight 91kg
Waist : size 36
40 laps(50m) continuous timing : 50 mins (improving)
I have dropped 11kg which means my fat ratio should have improved. However I have not experience the sinking legs effect yet. Maybe I am still very fat. haha.
I think the improvement in my timing is due to the weight loss. Any comments TS?
Personally my goal is to go below 40 mins for 40 laps. Prolly should pay TS a visit for advice if he dun mind.
Dive shops if you want more stylo. Otherwise, there's a swim shop beside it Tampines swimming pool, got sell this type of full coverage suits meant for muslim women.
I see ... My breast stroke is fine, just need to concentrate more on
front crawl now ...
Butterfly seems so tough but will learn from you one of these days ...

I dislike the JW sheltered pool ...
The water is so freaking cold ...
Why can't they build some indoor heated pools in Singapore for us
to swim 365 days !!!

how do you guys do freestyle so easily? through breaststroke, i can swim 10+ laps, but through freestyle, i swim 1 lap then tired already. somehow my arm gets very tired halfway through when i swam in freestyle, and i cannot coordinate my breathing properly.
tip: for ppl who are inclined to have runny noses (and temp loss of smell) after swimming like me, get a nose clip!
I finally got down to use a nose clip
WAH! big difference in my backstroke ****. I was able to do underwater dolphin a lot further cos of better breathing mgmt with the use of the nose clip.
I feel it's also good for butterfly cos when you plunge into the water after the push up phase, the water really assaults your nose. No such problem wif nose clip!
Bestest of all, no more runny nose after swimming also!![]()
Try blowing out alittle to prevent water from going in? Typically i maintain a small little pressure outwards just to prevent water from going in but minimal air wastage. Really rare to see people doing backstroke these days, even more rare to see backstroke dolphin kick.
