Lucky for me and friends' whom I helped supervise installation when they were deploying NGNBN. I made sure they fused both ports. :D

Mine was done mid 2012. Certainly not the first batch which I think is 2009 ?

Mine was around the same period in 2012. However as per what the opennet contractor said, some sub contractors did indeed only fuse 1 port. so.. he told me to watch out for it as well as he fused both in front of me.

Back somewhere 3 years ago as I recalled when OpenNet installation was Free.

The installation had to fiber ports connected and laid with two fibers. But I had no chance to subscribe for fiber when it was completed as I'm moving out of the old house to a new one.

The new house did not include fiber and wasn't ready for another 2 years, I had to stick with ADSL until OpenNet complete the laying works. I was worried about renewing my ADSL and what would happen if the new house wasn't fiber ready when I subscribe for Fiber.

As far as I recalled, the 2 ports are for Tx - Port 1 and Rx - Port 2. Something must have changed along the way since now they only use 1 port for Tx & Rx.

Perhaps it the way to save cost and the time to install 2 fiber into homes. That's lot of money being save instead of 2 fibers in each home.

If memory serves me well, the final NGNBN design and deployment plan (think still available in IDA website), the fibre was designed to be single-mode and for both tx and rx per port.

Just a quick update. Opennet responded to my email as follows:

"Kindly be informed that you may use the 2nd Port while the 1st Port is being
terminated or you may use both the Ports.
However 2nd Port may encounter insufficient capacity issue that would take
20 working days to resolve for the activation at the backend to be
completed."

The 2 fibers are for homeowners to have the option of subscribing to different RSPs or to get different triple play services (eg 1 fiber just for Starhub TV, 1 fiber for an ISP).

GPON is all bidirectional so Tx and Rx take place on the same fiber but on different wavelengths.

Actually the effort required to splice both ports in the TP is very low. Must have been really lazy for someone to have skipped the 2nd port -.-

Just check with any RSP and they will be able to check if ON appointment is required for your port 2 activation.

Or you can PM me your postcode + unit number (and preferably subscribe to VQ haha)

thanks man! in this case, i have to get opennet down again to open my port 2? does anyone know if it's payable? or i can just get my RSP to handle?

There's no fees to you. Just sign up with your choice of RSP and they will advise you of the dates for ON appointment and their own appointment. :)

sounds good! thanks alot. i've been facing ridiculous support from my current RSP and just damn sick of them.

If VQ was cheaper, i would definitely go with them.
