I am probably in the 1% who loves the notch. It stands out this way and not another S8 clone. And I recently ready Apply are apparently telling devs not to hide the notch in their apps too which I applaud.

I hardly ever use landscape mode. The only 2 times is when I take landscape photos and when I view that occasional YouTube video. So, for me, not really an issue.

Though I do agree with some of you an option to black out the notch would make some sense, it's really not the image Apple is trying to portray. The notch is one easy way to recognize the X. Apple isn't just gonna throw that away. It's iconic. It's unique.

It's gonna be iconic like the home button was. If they just made it a huge display, hard to tell it apart from every other edge to edge display phones now and into the future.

Agreed it's uniquely apple
Android notication icon damm small and ugly vs iOS

Not sure if you're being serious.

Yes notification icons are small on Android, but the last I checked, iOS doesn't even have any notification icons that you can see at one glance no matter whether you are on the home page or app drawer.

And yes, I find the black bar ugly, if not possibly distracting, when looking at the screen.

I think that notch is distracting. Viewing videos full screen with that black area at one side will be weird. Making the video smaller to get around it defeats the purpose of a bigger screen in the first place. But as with all things in life people will get used to it. The Essential Phone have something like this, narrower but much deeper round notch which I think is even more distracting but nobody made a big deal about it. The bias in the smart phone world is so obvious.

And we all know that the iPhone X will sell anyway.

I think the notch is being implemented due to the new gestures of swiping up is for the “home button” function. And it will be conflicting to the Control Center gesture.

They can’t implement it at the top as swiping down from the top is already for the Notification Center.

Thus splitting the top into 2, so when swiping down from either one, invokes the Notification Center or the Control Center which was been brought to the top.

Then again, Apple could have integrated the control center with the Notification Center. That would mean swiping between pages for the widgets, Notification Center and for the control center.

first they have the "lines",(at least a cover can hide it) then now comes the notch.
For the record, when i saw this it reminded me of samsung. Unique....really? Come on.

You don't need that cutout in order to have swipe down from top left corner and swipe down from top right corner. This is pure software. So no, this can't possibly be the justification.

The one on the Essential phone is equally distracting in my view. "Nobody made a big deal about it" probably because Essential is not that popular or known to many, nor do many people care, with so many Android phones to choose from.

You can always watch videos without the notch too. It's your choice.

Good way to see how the notch replaces the home button as iPhone branding.

actually thinking of it, it is actually a very clear iPhone branding. it is controversial, but you can't deny it is iconic.

when you buy a case, do you wanna read the text or look for an icon?

In the end I am guessing I am going to buy the iPhone X eventually. Just that this time it won't be at launch and with a heavy heart when handing over my $1,888.

It is their decision.

The fact that they sent information to developers not to hide that notch shows that it was a design decision made by Apple.

as for the rest of the phones... it's the race to the bottom to get to that bezel-less ideology.

everyone will eventually ends up looking like Xiaomi Mi Mix.

I don't like samsung's design, the 2 bars at the top and bottom isn't what I would call edge to edge screen.

Apple can literally claim that. Except for the black notch which is unavoidable.

Mi Mix also not all screen yet mind you. That bezel at the bottom is still larger than the notch of the iPhone X.

The notch can contain the battery status, date, LTE connectivity status info.

Very well thought out, dunno why you all rather waste more screen space to contain he information above.

Confirm EDMWers have not been thinking enough.
