A few possibilities

1. AMD is catering for worst off scenario - possible smörgåsbord of Murphy's law here
2. using full voltage, mine is run undervolted (cos most AMD chips are specced too high out of the factory, anyway)
3. not all PSUs are as efficient as the 80Plus Platinum rated 1200W Enermax used in testing
4. 110V PSUs are less efficient
5. WinRAR is not the most stressful app around (but it fits in the digicam capture screen nicely :D)
6. catering for crazy overclockers???
etc ...

Looks like the full test rig is already able to run at ~170W on full load off the wall so the official figure of TDP 220W just for the CPU seems simply extreme overkill attention seeking behaviour from AMD!

Hope you have been enjoying the Centurion exposé ride so far. :D

Probably switching the test bed to Intel to check out another HW mobo in the coming week so going to confirm the power meter readings with that. :)

Power Consumption (contd...)

xvid4PSP
Real world application power consumption measured, this xvid to x264 dual pass transcoding run does not quite hit 100% load though

1st Pass

2nd Pass
hwinfo64 monitoring is then reset to monitor this 2nd pass on its own

No throttling reported as far as can be seen

So the FX 9590 isnt that power consuming?

So the TDP sound more like 150W?

Definitely doesn't seem as scary as initially played up by the anti-AMD fear mongers, anyway the above figures show an undervolted rig running stable at stock clocks seems very manageable for both power and heat.

The TDP is the absolute maximum.

We won't see the CPU hitting this value under most circumstances. Not even running stress test like Prime etc....

You need specialised tests to really hit this value.

Just started testing this newer BIOS feature which I had specifically requested for today - offset undervolting

BIOS date = today, super fresh from the oven! :D

Multi-tasking - undervolted with 5GHz Turbo
Language translation from Spanish to English and simultaneous multiple downloads = Turbo kicked in! :)

Ripbot264 - undervolted with 5GHz Turbo
Note that Offset Vcore undervolt setting is available only in P1.30B along with the latest AGESA version

1st pass only monitoring - Turbo kicked in

2nd pass only monitoring, no Turbo kicking in

hardwareCanucks AMD FX-9590 Review; Piledriver at 5GHz - Conclusion

Summarised for those prone to mouse click inertia and TL: DR issues :)

Conclusion

Typically, by the time writing the conclusion comes around, I know exactly how to sum things up. Not this time. The FX-9590 is an impressive tour de force from AMD but one which ultimately caused an epic battle between my enthusiast mindset and the side of me that appreciates efficiency. In the end, the little red speed demon won out over the halo-totting tree hugger. What AMD has created may not be the best processor around and it isn’t unassailable in every situation but it is pure, unadulterated fun for anyone who appreciates technological achievements.

...

For daring to be different and injecting some much-needed excitement into a stagnant CPU market, AMD may not have broken any performance barriers but they have certainly earned my respect.
