‘The Bridge’ finally a TV crime series set on the U.S.-Mexican border

The new FX series called “The Bridge,” is actually a remake of the Scandinavian hit “Bron,” which originally opened with a super graphic scene; a gruesomely but strategically halved body placed on a bridge that is the Denmark-Sweden border with half the body on the Denmark side and the other half in Sweden.
“The Bridge,” written and produced by Meredith Stiehm (of “Cold Case,” “ER” and “NYPD Blue”) and Elwood Reid (of “Cold Case” and “Hawaii 5-0”) is set on the border between El Paso and Juarez and centers on two detectives, one from the United States and one from Mexico, who must work together to track down a serial killer who has been wreaking grisly havoc on both sides of the border.
It’s the perfect setting for such a drama considering the stark contrast of the infamously violent Ciudad Juarez where blood and brutality seem to run in the streets daily against the almost surreal calm of sister city El Paso, which boasts some of the lowest crime rates in the United States for its size and population.
“For years, networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success,” says John Landgraf, president and general manager of FX Networks. “I’m thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code and they have done so magnificently,” he added.
The show will star Mexican-born and Academy Award nominee Demian Bichir, best known for his role in the award-winning film, “A Better Life” and actress Diane Kruger known for her roles in “Inglorious Basterds” and “National Treasure”. In “The Bridge” Bichir portrays Marco Ruiz, a family man and homicide investigator for the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Marco represents a dying breed as one of the last good men standing in a corrupt police force outgunned by drug cartels. When a body is dumped on the bridge that spans the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez border, Ruiz is obliged to collaborate with his American counterpart, detective Sonya Cross played by Kruger. Cross, while highly effective at her job, is a gritty and relentless cop with an undiagnosed disorder that causes her to be a little too frank and candid much of the time.
The first episode of the series, set to premier in July 10, 2013 is directed by Gerardo Naranjo, the Mexican filmmaker behind the acclaimed drug-trafficking drama “Miss Bala”. The network has ordered 13 episodes and “The Bridge” is a co-production of Shine America and FX Productions.

LOS ANGELES – February 12, 2013 – FX is headed for the border, placing a 13-episode order for The Bridge, a new drama series from Writer/Producers Meredith Stiehmand Elwood Reid starring Academy Award® Nominee Demián Bichir and Diane Kruger, it was announced today by John Landgraf, President and General Manager, FX Networks. Diane Kruger stars as “Detective Sonya Cross,” a dogged cop who has an undiagnosed disorder that falls on the autism spectrum. Cross is shockingly candid and calls the world as she sees it, which can be off-putting to her colleagues, but she is also extremely effective at her job.
Ted Levine plays “Lieutenant Hank Wade,” a member of Detective Cross’s team at the El Paso Police Department who is a veteran cop with a weathered, cowboy swagger. He is not surprised by anything that human beings will do to one another, but he’s utterly baffled by the office coffeemaker. Hank knows that Sonya communication skills are challenged, and repeatedly has to advise her how to work more diplomatically with others.
Annabeth Gish plays “Charlotte Millwright,” a wealthy ranch wife suddenly widowed when her older husband Karl suffers a massive heart attack while on the Mexican side of the border. A sheltered woman with a ranch to run, Charlotte quickly learns that her late husband has many shocking secrets.
Thomas M. Wright plays “Steven Linder,” a wolf of a man who is no stranger to the dark and jumbled chaos of Juárez.
Matthew Lillard plays “Daniel Frye,” a cocky reporter with the El Paso Times whose hard partying ways have taken a toll on his once promising journalism career.
FX originally ordered the Pilot episode in July of 2012, and wrapped Pilot production in December.
