Just finished the drone course by Skills future skillsHQ.
They just tweaked the course material . You will need to pay $10 to keep the drone. Don't worry it's new one,the one that you crash and crash during the training course.

It's advised for everyone to Go, get the basics of manoevering right. Before you plunge into getting DJI drones.

During the course , everyone will get chances of flying the big DJI Phantom 4 Pro. It's was a very good experience flying it with instructor beside you teaching you the correct way.

You will be issued one new drone. You will fly it during your training. And you take it back home. Depends if you crash and crash during training. The drone seems to be able to hold major crashes. Instructor said they once dropped from 5th flooor and survived.

60m to 100m range . I haven really tested yet.

Based on what the instructor said, this course do lots of practice on real drones. Everyone will get to fly DJI Phantom Pro 4 while the rest of the course plays older model drones. And some drone courses use the simulator.
Moreover, this is skillsfuture claimable. Not sure if other drone course are certified by Skillsfuture. There is a certificate of completion.

You could use it to apply for activity permit or operational permit from CAAS. And if you decide to take on drone licence, you can use your drone course certification as a justification

The drone that they issue is Syma X5UW. Flight time around 10mins per battery. They will lend u 2 extra batteries during the training. If you decide at the end of the course to buy additional new batteries, it will be $15 each

Hey guys! I’m thinking of getting a DJI Mavic Pro. I’m new to flying drone (never flew any radio-controlled device either). Do you think it is advisable to get a cheap drone to fly first to gain some experience?

And a shoutout to those who attended the drone course mentioned- to you think it is necessary to attend the course? What do they teach in the course? I think one selling point for the course is that you get to keep the drone. This way, I might be able to use the drone to gain experience which will definitely aids me in flying the Mavic Pro in the future.

Thanks all in advance for the advice!

Hi,

DJIs (Phantom, Mavic, Spark) are "autopilot" drones, which means you setup the "waypoints" on the map and the drone will fly accordingly, and its flying path guided by GPS.

Lower end drones like Syma X5UW are "manual" drones, which means you move the drones up/down/left/right/forward/backward through remote control.

Auto-pilot drones
- e.g. DJI mavic/Phantom/Spark, Hubsan H501A
- less user flight control needed, it can fly by itself guided by GPS
- extremely good as video or aerial photography drones
- open source flight controller/software: Ardupilot, DJI
- For any auto-pilot drone, believe to have some modes allowing you to fly "manual"
- Price: S$300-3K, Note: S$300 Hubsan H501A is without camera stabilizer
- Lift-off Weight: 0.3-0.4kg (Hubsan H501A, DJI spark) to 1.4kg (Phantom, mavic)

Manual drones
- e.g. Hubsan H501S, Syma X5UW
- User remote control all movements
- mainly as racing drones and fun flying
- open source flight controller/software: CleanFlight
- Most of these are lower end drones without GPS. Some come with altitude hold.
- Price: S$20-300, I normally build 210mm DIY-quadcopter at about S$150 each
- Lift-off Weight: 0.02-0.4kg (JJRC H36, Hubsan H501S) to 0.6kg (Racing drones)

For me, I only fly cheap manual drones.... :)

If you want to have good aerial video/photography, you need to get a DJI Mavic or Phantom.
You can go youtube and find out more information, or attend the drone course. Have fun flying!

Thanks for the informative reply bro! :s12:

Btw, what do you mean by "setup the "waypoints" on the map and the drone will fly accordingly, and its flying path guided by GPS"? You mean you can actually plot in where you want the drone to fly in the map and it would fly by itself? Because there are joystick on the controller, so I would assume you would still need to move the drone around while flying.

I guess more or less I have my heart set on Mavic Pro. Heh. It's just a matter of whether I would want to attend the course to get a free manual drone and gain some flying insights and experience.

On another hand, anyone knows the cheapest deal to get a Mavic Pro? Or perhaps I should wait for the Black Friday deals:s12:

The course got teach about camera settings?
That will only be available in Advanced course on aerial photography,site surveillance.
Basic course does not teach you photography on the Syma or DJI. Only the basic techniques on handling drones manually without GPS

Hi,

I had never attended a drone course before and do not know what it is. If you do not want to attend the drone course, suggesting you should get these cheap drones and try out first before buying Mavic Pro:
1) JJRC H36/eachine e010, about S$17. This drone is without altitude hold and powerful like a small racing drone. If you know how to fly this little quadcopter, you will be able to manually fly all multi-rotor drones whether big or small, quadcopters or hexacopters, as joystick controls are all the same.
2) Syma X21W, about S$70. Get the version with 1megapixel/720p camera. This drone is with altitude hold and much easier to control (for beginners) than JJRC H36.

Remember to select "mode 2, left hand throttle" and buy extra batteries. You can fly these tiny drones inside your apartment. you have to go figure out where to buy yourself. I'm only a drone hobbyist, not a seller or trainer. ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, before you get your expensive DJI Mavic Pro of S$2000+, you might want to think/consider:
- You cannot fly that drone indoor
- You might injure yourself or someone with that 0.7kg, big propeller drone
- Whole Singapore has that 200ft flying height limit, I do not know where and what video or aerial photography you are going to capture.
- Too many tall buildings (200ft is about 18-floor hdb), everywhere tall trees of ~100ft, drainage, too windy, too crowded, too much RF interference, airport/military bases/expressway everywhere on this tiny island. I've difficulties to find a regular open space to fly larger drones (except flying tiny indoor drones at my own home).
- Mavic has the features of "Auto return home" and "obstacle avoidance", but at the end you might still lost your Mavic due to crash into building/trees, completely cannot find it, gone into private/military premises, attacked by eagles, confiscated and etc.
- Whatever you watch in video, or whatever you read in the spec might not be what you are expecting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, answering to some of the questions you asked. (I'm too new here and cannot post URL/image/video. You need to perform the search on youtube yourself)

1) simple auto-pilot demo => Search "Breeze 4k Live Stream Demo, Yuneec Electric Aviation"
This is a good demo of follow-me auto-pilot. The Yuneec Breeze drone flies by itself.

2) auto-pilot modes => "Typhoon H Video Contest, Yuneec Electric Aviation"
Common auto-pilot modes are follow-me, orbit around me, waypoints (shown at bottom left of video).

3) Manual flying/racing mode => Search "Testing of DJI Mavic Pro Quad Drone warehouse racing from Gearbest"

4) Newer Smarter drones => Search "DJI - Introducing Spark". I'm tempted to buy one, haha.

Come back to tell us how good Mavic is, after you had played with it.

Hi all, i just started this not too long. I have play flight simulators before so i roughly understand the basic of flight controls. I will probably be better if i fly fpv... But as i fly line of sight with cheapo drones.. I keep losing orientation after turning and i have to stop. Get my heading and start flying again.. Which i see most people fly quite smoothly. Turning and flipping to and fro. Yawing sometimes make me activate my throttle too. Sometimes reducing too much altitude and almost crashing or punching out to high into the air. Is there any good practice for line of sight flying? I fly near cck alone but the area is not suitable because of trees and mosquito lol

Hi, i'm assuming you are flying quadcopter.

losing orientation: Paint your quadcopter's front to bright red and change the front propeller to red. You will be able to see its head and tail for about 300ft away, or can also try set your quadcopter to headfree/headless mode.

place: behind CCK ITE or opposite CCK blk 810 coffee shop this is a big parcel of land. Is flatten, and frequent grass cutting preparing for building new HDB. I think is so big that you can even fly fixed wing planes there.

flying fpv: may be you can get a tiny eachine aurora 80 or kingkong 90GT and fly indoor. These are tiny 80-90mm brushless quadcopters with FPV camera. search on youtube "Eachine Aurora - First Indoor FPV test - Betaflight 3.1.5 DSHOT600"

Normally I fly quadcopters at TeckWhye football field, and may be we can fly together there. I still cannot fly quadcopters properly.

Yes im flying quadcopter. Currently has a syma x56w got it for like 50 bucks. With altitude hold n headless mode. The wifi fpv is too lag to see properly. And the distance is too short. I flew it up like 6 storey and i lose connection. Luckily it juz hover there and slowly decend as battery runs low. Intend to get eachine tx03 with eachine 800d vr google in future and mod it to bugs 3. Still thinking if i should get a rc controller. Teck whye near my place too maybe we can meet up one day
