Hello all drone hobbyists,
I am new to this drone hobby, i read up a lot on DJI, Cyma, parrot and some popular drones brands and in the end i got myself a china made MJX Bugs 2 drone with GPS, altitude hold, 5Ghz range. $200. very decent and easy to use, so far i crash once out of the many times flying it and it was scary enough for me to ask this question. The crash was due to the fact that it did not get a good gps lock before i took off, so it veered off to the side once it took off.
Thankfully it did not hurt anyone during my crash.
I was thinking if any of you are aware of any liability insurance that will cover me when the drone i am flying crash and injured someone or someone's property? I am thinking of bringing this drone to europe to take some aerial footage and is worried if the drone once again go crazy and crash. Of cos the usual common sense applies here, we fly it responsibly and not over areas with human traffic or property, but sh*t happens. Anyone knows if there is such insurance? I check that the liability insurance portion of travel insurance does not cover usage of drones.
I am not sure if any drone-related insurance is available. and to be honest I have never considered them
but as a fellow drone user, I do my pre-flight test every time I go flying to minimize the possible risk.
I usually perform the standard take off and hover, check my signal strength and perform a range test. unlike your GPS capable drones. . I also make sure all the nuts and screws are re-tighten. my drone is setup to failsafe by cutting motors completely so it will drop like a stone. at any moment notice, I can toggle the failsafe and kill the motors so it will drop, hopefully minimizing the chance of injury or property damage.
my friend just lose his MJX Bugs2c 3 weeks back with the same problem you encountered. Which he didn't get a good satellite lock (6 or more sats links) before taking off, it flew off aggressively to one direction and when my friend kind of panic and toggle on RTH, the drone flew off to somewhere else since it didn't capture the launch point coordinates..
His drone was never recovered and as what I understand, he was going around searching for it (big field area about 8 soccer fields in the west side) but as it suddenly rain heavily and he abandon the search and bought a 2nd drone instead.
generally make sure you perform your pre-flight test so you know everything is working as design.
Calibration, GPS sat links, Signal strength, battery checks and fly within the drone's design limits.
