Do take another look at the stock run first before talking about overclocking Haswell <70C, remember this is already on Enermax 240ELC open air cooling.

Haswell@stock

You need to be realistic with Haswell oc/temps. :)

you all not concerned with the usb3 bug meh? or is coz your desktop would never go into standby mode?

As stated by intel its not a major issue. You just need to unplug and replug the affected device after waking from standby. Even then, there is no data loss and not every device affected. Some external drives can still work.

I refering to i5-4670k
Haha:s13:

Btw the tread is about haswell right hehe :)

Thx lot MacClipper, basically looking at the results i can draw to this conclusion.

If i am planning to overclock on intel "K" series the results is not going to be impressive. If i were to use entry level cooler max i can get is 4-4.1 Ghz from a base of 3.4ghz. (Likely with load temperature hitting the high end of 90 degree)

If getting any other CPU other than "K" series slight overclocking is totally locked down.

Basically from a value prospective intel has just killed my urge in getting a haswell "K" Series CPU.

Going back to Ivy Bridge is also not an option due to the change in pin count. As in it is a lot harder to find compatible MB 3 yrs down the road.

AMD Camp look like a better value option at the moment, but gaming benchmark don't goes in favor of this CPU.

So what is going to be? Continue holding on to my Q6600 until the next release. AMD Steamroller?

I was about to rate that MSI Z87 MPower board is the prettiest until I saw this...

Meet the Asus ROG Z87 Maximus VI Formula.

With an almost complete monopoly of the desktop market, the days of cheap cool crazy overclockable Intel chips are certainly over.

Doesn't make any market sense for Intel (& its shareholders) to allow anyone to clock a S$300 4670K high enough to challenge their enthusiast LGA2011 platform.

Got to learn to roll with it. :)

PS: strangely, I actually prefer the Haswell 4670K over the Ivy 3570K cos at least, it is faster, clocks to the same 4.5GHz with lower volts plus the Z87 mobos are overall nicely built with added enticing features (eg. plenty native SATA3).

Intel needs competition again! AMD is actually in a better position than nVidia coz they have a x86 CPU. I think nVidia will be out of business earlier than AMD at least when it comes to dedicated GPUs. In the heterogeneous computing world is no room for nVidia naturally.

That's why Nvidia is branching out into other market segment such as mobile and super-computing.

Seriously, AMD need to do something to balance out the x86 x64 market or we will get played by Intel.

Scenes From My Armchair

Just sharing with you guys my constant scenery for the past few nights.

Simply love the way the Debug LED (and Pwr/Rst buttons) are positioned on this Asrock Z87 Extreme6 mobo at the nearest corner to where I am sitting - no need to strain my neck or get up from where I am just to check the Debug code during overclocking.

Really nice! :)

PS: The clear plastic cube that you see is a simple DIY 90 degree reflector for the LED image.

WHEA-VEN For Everyone?

Just dawned upon me one of the reasons why I had disliked Ivy Bridge so much was its propensity towards WHEA errors at the edge of stability. It usually takes me up to a week to tediously fine tune and get the voltages right just so that Windows Event Viewer can keep a clean sheet.

After 5 days of Haswell o'cing, I have seen only a single WHEA error during all that initial trial and error overclocking. In these early days of Haswell pushing, o'c instability shows itself most often in total system freezes and then BSOD 101/124 instead.

imo, much preferred over the WHEA errors where you have to remember to actively check the Event Viewer all the time for hints of possible instability and insidious data corruption.

Wonder if the new FIVR feature has anything to do with it? :)

So far it's good news, the Extreme4 behaves almost exactly like the bigger brother the 6 so you should have no issues getting your o'c up to speed easily.

I am testing out 4.5GHz already within a few minutes of setting it up since I already know how this CPU behaves. :)
