Longshot write-up

Hmm, let me try to do a write up on the longshot, based on my position as a new nerfer.

I got my longshot about 2 weeks ago at OG orchard.

Whatever comparisons are made are based on observations of others' experiences, not my own.

Looks 4/5
Hands down, this has got to be one of the coolest looking nerf blasters ever. Without the barrel extension, it really looks like a futuristic assault rifle (the chunky types) or a pulse rilfe. However, i do not really like the barrel extension, and the bipods are simply ridiculous. The scope is a little too big and chunky too, not to mention useless, so points down for that. And the paint scheme...yeeks. i think it would look better in the yellow/black paint scheme of the other n strike blasters. My guess is that its so recognisable that everyone will know you have a longshot in a nerf war. Whether you strike fear in their hearts or make them laugh is another matter though. Not as badass as the vulcan, but still badass-y enough. Like Vin Diesel(whatever movie) v.s John Mclane(Bruce Willis, Die Hard). Tip: Try mounting the scope at the front of the rail thing, beyond the little plastic ridge, for a more CQB-y look.

Even my parents are impressed.

Functionality 3/5
Too many useless bits. the barrel extension does nothing for range. As for accuracy, i don't know. I personally find no difference in accuracy with or without the barrel. The front gun thing is pretty decent, after you removed the air restrictor and added in a bb spring like i did. Ranges you're gonna get is about the same as the stock longshot, though good luck trying to aim with that. Still, I think it won't do much good as a sidearm. The scope is useless, put there for cosmetic purposes only. You'd do better with the iron(or plastic?) sights. And the scope blocks the plastic sights.

As for the main blaster, its pretty average. Decent ranges, power etc. Usage wise, nothing too special about a stock longshot. Which is a damn pity, as the longshot could have been like the "next gen" nerf blasters, where you could really kill lizards and other assorted houshold pests. The nerf longshot could have been a more "serious" blaster in terms of ranges and capabilities. It looks like it is, but it just isn't. Disappointment, sigh.

As for Blaster Egronomics™, the longshot does its thing quite nicely. The hideous bipods support the main blaster+ barrel extension quite well enough, though if you put a magazine into the spare mag holder you wont be able to move it about much. However, my wrist hurt after i spent an hour shooting darts and reloading. I suggest using BOTH sides of the charging handle often.

Even my parents are impressed.

Fun 5/5
Ohhh yeahhh. Bolt action! Magazine changes! The very macho plastic sounds of nerf guns when you slap in a magazine, pull the charging handle, and watch your ready indicator go from black to red! Nice size! You can really live out your army/commando/swat/whateverspecialforces fantasies. Kicking down doors, blaster at ready, then shooting your sister in the face. Like i did. Ooops.

Modifiability: Not recommended for beginners.
Its like a minefield inside. one wrong move and your longshot is done. So many screws, and little springs, and tiny itty bitty parts. All must be present and arranged properly. Air restrictor removal requires power tools, and extremely high intelligence to decipher the writeups made on longshot AR removal. I only got as far as bending out the plunger chamber (because i didnt dare to unscrew anything).

That being said, the longshot has alot of potential for modifications. Just don't try it 2 weeks after you got your first ever nerf gun.

Even my parents are impressed.

Overall 4/5
The nerf longshot has a few pitfalls, but it more than makes up for it with its looks and fun factor. Nerfing, afterall, is supposed to be fun, isn't it. And as a beginner, i'm real glad i got the longshot. Even my parents are impressed.

So that concludes it :D

Yup, had those like more than 10+ years ago, i remember the first generation of nerf blasters were being introduced during that time (razor beast, rocket storm, secret shot etc), though whatever i had back then have all already long been trashed, lost or given away... who knew they'd actually become collectible items now? :)

Anyways, i guess if you were to keep current blasters like Longshots or Vulcans in mint condition, maybe in another 10+ years time they'll also become collectibles too! :D

If we were to look at whats avaliable in SG or JB at the moment, then my latest recommendation would be the Nerf Rapid Fire 20 (there is still stock avaliable in Jusco JB).

I just collected a few boxes of Rapid Fire 20s from my colleague, so i'll be posting up a review soon (with test firing videos). :)

i would say for your friend the iron man magstrike would be gd,
if you can find it that is....

as if you guys cant afford a longshot,
i think maybe you should look into the cheaper nerf like nitefinders,
some of dart tag guns..

or like rebirth you might want to look into creating a home-made nerf gun
it would be personalized by you and i think your friend would appreciate the work you put into it,and it would be cheaper....just really troublesome, the parts like pvc for me is difficult to find...

but rebirth seems to know where the stuff are so you could probably ask him

hoped i help :D

Thats interesting, i've not seen the Nerf Firefly being sold in singapore before (so far i've only seen them avaliable at Jusco JB).

Fireflys have a similiar mechanism as Mavericks, but with a bigger 8 round cartridge and a flash burst feature which "charges" the special glow-in-the-dark foam darts. The blaster design is quite cool, very Halo-style. :)

I'll probably go check it out at Taka tomorrow, keen to see if its the new Blue/Yellow version or maybe even the new Iron Man version with Red/Yellow paint scheme (these are the new variants).

Btw, here is what the Iron Man Firefly version looks like (got the photo from nerfhaven):

You're right, I went to Taka at lunchtime today, other than a few remaining packs of secret strikes, there are now zero stocks of nerf blasters there.

Took a stroll across to Paragon, Metro re-stocked some Mavericks, though as usual they still have lots of Strikefires collecting dust on the shelves. Similiar situation at Toys r us too.

Looks like we'll have to look out for the next shipment. :)
