Hi Brotherhood of Nexus,
I have been reading through this thread on how to order the Nexus 5, and a lot of people are very helpful, with suggestions on forwarding services, VPN, and delivery periods. Here, I would just like to share a bit on my experience of ordering the Nexus 5 for my wife and I.
Please note the following variables in my situation:
- G-mail account used: My own personal one (not newly created)
- Region of Google Play Store: Japan
- Credit Card: OCBC Plus! Visa
- VPN: None (office network is connected to Japan servers)
- Forwarding Service: Tenso (
Forwarding service connecting overseas customers and Japanese online stores [ Tenso.com ])
(Do let me know if anything else should be included above)
1. Creating account at Tenso (28th Nov, Thu, 1931hrs)
I created an account at Tenso, but I was initially worried at verifying my identity. I mean, I wanted to order the phones right now, but the forwarding service requires (by law) to properly identify me. And I was not sure how long it would take for such verification. So I sent my NRIC copy (front and back, some other bros have logically blanked out their face, which I didn't), and it got verified within a day. Since Google doesn't ship out immediately, this is not much of a worry.
2. Ordering at Google Play Store Japan (29th Nov, Fri, 1458hrs)
Since the network I am using is technically in Japan, I can enter the Play Store with no further issues (please point me to the best post on VPN services for other bro's usage). I ordered 2 sets of 32GB (1 Black, 1 White). I used my Tenso's address for both Shipping and Billing. When adding a new credit card to the account, it will only need you to enter the card number, expiry date, and security code. After ordering, this is shown on "My Orders" page.
It shows "28th November 2013" because maybe they are using US timing?
After this, it becomes a waiting game.
3. Shipping out of Google Play order (2nd Dec, Mon, 1611hrs)
I received e-mail that my order has been shipped out. Based on the posts from other bros, this means that my order is successful and I do not have to worry about cancellation. Here is a screenshot of the shipped order in "My Orders".
As mentioned previously, the order date is most likely in US.
Another waiting game begins for it to reach Japan. Here is the screenshot of the tracking from Google to Tenso.
I don't know about the rest of you, but ever since the package arrived in Japan, I have been refreshing this page every 5 minutes.
This tracking page shows the exact timing (Japan, +9).
4. E-mail notifying arrival of package at Tenso (4th Dec, Wed, 1833hrs)
Tenso sent me an e-mail about the arrival of the package, and the pending payment. Again, with reference to other bro's posts, payment to Tenso should be done AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for the best reaction time from Tenso. Yes, they may have put on the right side of the site that any payment received by tomorrow 8AM (Japan, +9) will be shipped by 2 days later before 6PM (Japan, +9), but why wait? There might be a slight chance that with prompt approval, you will be in line for next day shipping. I paid immediate upon receiving the e-mail, so based on the dates provided (paid by 5th Dec, 8AM), my package will be shipped before 7th Dec, 6PM). More waiting. Here is the screenshot of the paid items page in Tenso.
Please don't forget to get the FREE insurance. And also declare the value of your package truthfully. Not worth getting it stuck in Customs to save a couple of dollars. (Or in worst case scenarios, claiming insurance on lost packages)
5. Surprise e-mail from Tenso on shipping (5th Dec, Thu, 1710hrs)
I was seriously surprised and didn't expect this. Shipped out by next day! The bros were not kidding, not at all. Can you tell what is next? Can you see the pattern here? More waiting. I was initially worried about Speedpost's reliability (based on other bros' experiences), and I was resigned to not getting it in time for the weekend for me to play around with it. But refreshing both the Speedpost and EMS tracking page made me half crazy. Until it arrived in SG 2 days later (a bit later than other bros' packages). Here is a quick timeline (all in SG time):
5th Dec, 1700: Shipped out from Tenso
7th Dec, 0028: Arrived in SG, processing at Sorting Centre (this was not updated in both tracking pages until 7 hours later)
7th Dec, 1248: With Delivery Courier
Unfortunately, I was not at home that afternoon (family day). But to my surprise, the postwoman SMSed my at 1915 saying that the package is in her hands, and she will attempt to redeliver the following day (Sunday!) between 10AM-1PM. Of course I said yes! The delivery came at 1248, and I had to pay GST (SGD 84.20) on cost of (items + shipping). She requested for cash and exact change, so please take note. On the cases of no GST when other bros ordered, I believed only 1 set was ordered, and the total costs was not more than SGD 600. Can anyone confirm on this (for those not required to pay GST)?
Here are the remaining screenshots with timings for your estimation.

I hope the above information will help other bros who are really interested in getting this wonderful phone (minus warranty). Do note that these are based on my experience alone, and may not be reproduced in your situation. If I have stated anything incorrectly, please let me know and I will edit accordingly. Thank you!
Additional note:
Reading other bros' posts, there are situations where the Google Play store in Nexus 5 defaulted to Japan when logging in using the e-mail which you ordered from. I can confirm that this is not the case for both my phones. I am not sure why though.
- Latest Update -
I have not been using the phone since I received it (go holiday), but midway during my holiday, the Google Play store in my Galaxy Nexus switched to Japan store, and upon reaching home, checking the Nexus 5 Play store also shows Japan store! So I guess it will affect everyone after all.
