If I want to update to 4.4.2 should I flash back to stock kernel, lock and unroot my N5?

If you did not made any modifications besides unlock, root and replace kernel, you just need to flash back to stock kernel. No need to unroot and lock.

But root will be lost, so you should flash the root zip after updating. Also, depending on what custom kernel you used, you might have to rename some files. Easiest way is to "fastboot flash system.img", but seeing the images are already on 4.4.2, you can also use the "fastboot update" command so you won't lose data.

How to install Android 4.4 KitKat on Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10

The Upgrade portion :
Upgrade

Using this method you can upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat and keep all personal data on the device. There is one major caveat, though -- the bootloader had to be unlocked before any personal was stored on the Nexus smartphone or tablet. Here is what you have to do in order to initiate the upgrade process:

Using Notepad, open the flash-all.bat file (or, right click on it and select Edit). To avoid any issues make sure that your Nexus device is disconnected from the PC beforehand.
Identify the fastboot -w update sequence.
Remove the -w so it now appears as fastboot update. Save the file.
Connect your Nexus device to the PC in fastboot mode.
Open the flash-all.bat file in the Root folder (or, you can use the flash-all.bat command in a command prompt window opened in the Root folder).

Depends on quality of reception. If the bar is constantly green, battery still ok. But at home, where my bar is 1-2, always grey/yellow in the battery screen, you're gonna have trouble even if your phone is connected to wifi.

Luckily with root I just use llama/tasker to auto switch to 3G/2G at home, then auto toggle to LTE when outside.

may i ask what rom are you using and how do you toggle LTE/3G with tasker?

m1. i just went to my APN settings and reset it to default. i dont know how to set the APNs.

kinda lost now

thing to note, my nexus 5 was fine last week, my mobile data was fine and all.
after the recent update, everything went to hell.

is your default apn M1(Sunsurf)? i'm from m1 too and from what i gather, only this setting and Sunsurf Internet(sunsurf) give LTE/3G coverage.

thanks. so the only way now to toggle LTE/3G is to use xposed framework? can't use that because i'm using ART.
I'm sure some custom roms might have that functionality, but I would like to stay on stock as much as possible. :D Thus the usage of xposed to get custom rom functionality. But so far this is the only way that I've seen that allows it to be automated.

Anyway, I personally don't understand people using ART. Tried it, the speed increase is so little to the point of being placebo on a N5. But not my place to comment, given the speed nuts I've seen at XDA. :D

I guess some people like to try out new things, and after trying, they see no point going back.
Like you say, placebo until :s22:

trying out art to see if it has any effect on battery life, so far can hit 3.5 hours of continuous surfing on chrome on 3G, with 19% battery remaining. haven't tested using DVM
using tasker to repeatedly go through first 5 pages of edmw to simulate browsing through forums, as edmw updates with new thread/posts every other min

Just wondering if using whatsapp purely, can hit 5hours of SOT or not :s11:

Haha no regrets at all leaving the huge screen and huge battery behind..?

I got in return are the extremely smooth ui, slightly easier to use with 1 hand and free of touchwiz bloat ...
Losing the huge screen not too much of a concern but I do miss the battery life of note 3 as it's the only phone I never had to worry about battery running out.

A good compromise could be LG G2 flashed with cm11 but it's too much hassle

Ya the screen wise I think the 5" on the Nexus 5 is good enough. It's the battery that I will most probably worry about. Currently using a Note 3 but have ordered a Nexus 5. Will see which one to let go eventually. Haha
