For those who are wearing progressive lenses, did you all get it right the first time, or did you have to go through at least one round of remade? Can also share details of how did your optician perform the eye test for you?

The reason I'm asking is, I just had my first pair of progressive lenses made and I am still unable to read sharp with both eyes at the same time even after 2 rounds of remade.

My optician only conducted a very brief eye test with the eye chart which was completed in maybe 15-20mins? I wasn't shown the red/green colour charts for comparison, and no lights shone through the eyes either which I thought should be part of a basic eye test?

Of course it could be my eyes have some underlying issues that are causing the inaccurate fitting. But I thought the experience could be better if the optician could be more thorough with the examination.

The shop that I went to is a highly recommended one in the East and the lens model is Hoya Lifestyle 3 or 3i (L3UM8VG-HS5 S5G SHV3) which I paid about $1100 excluding frame.

It will be great if anyone can recommend an optical shop which conducts a more comprehensive eye test (e.g., pressure check or fundus photography). Thanks!

Lifestyle 3 is a very good lens..
I won’t comment on the duochrome test being done or not..
but light shining in..? A fundus photography examination? Or do you mean measuring the pupil point with the pen torch used?

So in a way.. you don’t intend to go back to the current practice anymore to try to rectify it?

Hi Starrynitzz, I feel your frustration and inconvenience caused as you need to travel several times to get it fixed but at the end it still failed.
I am using Hoya Balansis for many pairs of glasses. I have sensitive left eye, as a result, my issue is the adjustment of the frame as some frames are sturdy, some just too flexible. If a bit out, my left eye will be able to feel it. So far I have no issue with the testing procedures which you have mentioned that last around 20-25 mins. Lastly, seems like the optical shop you mentioned is also the one I visited too.

Just thinking it will be nice if local shops are able to do these as part of the standard eye test package for customers.

I feel pai sei to go back already, having gone back 6 times in 2 months. And the current lenses although not perfect but can still make do compared to the previous ones.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The staff are okay, polite and welcoming. And I like that they have many nice looking frames in the shop.

Hi, since you have sensitive eyes, repeat visit is inevitably. Just go back, tell them “nicely”, get it fixed and it is not as if you have nothing to do. Mine is really inconvenient as I don’t stay in the east. Each time after adjustment. I looked at the end of the coffeeshop, (hope we are talking the same place) it seems ok but discomfort only surfaces much later. However, during driving, it is when I confirmed I need a repeat visit. It is really an uneventful process. Guess, I should stop making glasses annually if such inconveniences persists. Thanks

Thanks. Our face is asymmetrical. Guess it is still a challenge for optometrist. For me, out of so many pairs of progressive lens, my RB sunglasses probably have the most visits to the shop to adjust.

I am planning to buy a new frame and new progressive lenses. four nines really impressed me with their pre-service attitude and their frames look good and feel comfortable. They told me that they offer life time servicing. Visio and Optique 2 have many brands of frames though. if I remember correctly, I saw the widest selection of Silhouette, Lindberg and Yellow Plus frames at capitol! TIA.

just wondering whats the price of an average price of progressive lens glasses with transition. Got my 1st pair of progressive lens with transition in year 2010 at ar $500, L -7.00 +1.25, R -6.00+1.25 i still keep the receipt , essilor lens with transition and normal plastic frame. Used it everyday as the other pair of glasses was just for my running purpose. My progressive lens coating start to peel off since last year so in need of replacement. To my surprise, this pair has been with me for more than 10 years and its definitely money worth. Wash it under detergent and running water everyday as I was working outdoor then. Thks

Hi, four nines really made me feel like I am shopping for a Mercedes with Lexus reliability. The feeling and assurance they gave were really top class as they offer lifetime servicing so that I can always go back to them with any problems and for regular maintenances. Until you explained, I tot they are a super premium "own days" and hence I was apprehensive. Lol. Sorry I was a mountain tortoise who finally crawl out of the cave. However, their pricing of some models are similar to Lindberg around the 750-800 range, which I am now toggling between the 2. Four nines told me that they offer Nikon lens as "default" and I can choose many other brands too. How is Nikon progressive compared to the usual Varilux, Hoya and Zeiss?

Hi, my Essilor Varilux started peeling at late year after using 2.5 years. Some shops told me Hoya and Zeiss have better coating, don't know how true this is. My recent price checks show prices starting at 1k to 1.9k depending (Varilux, Hoya, Zeiss) for progressive with transition depending on the tier. As I realised that prices between similar tier across 3 brands are like around 150-200 differences. With my peeling experience, I am really thinking of trying other brands.

Hi there, in general I would say hoya HVLL coating is pretty reliable as they won the top coating award too. Overall it also depends on our personal handling at times. You can consider going for Hoya next as the lens design is similar to Essilor.

I would say Nikon is a good brand. Comparing with hoya/Zeiss general, I would say probably slightly lower than them. Unless you go for the most premium NiKon lens which costs a lot. Or else Brand’s like hoya/Zeiss has lenses which cost lower but provides superb comfort.

There are cheaper alternatives but they won’t feel as comfortable as what you are wearing. You have high prescription meaning, likely you are using 1.6/1.67. Coupled with transitions, and for the lens to cost 500, you might be using the Essilor liberty which is their entry level lens.
For a more premium option then we would be looking at around 700-900 range for the lenses, thus it would retain a similar thickness but at the same time giving a better field of view/comfort.
