Any optical shops to recommend? Don't mind going anywhere in Singapore. I wanna make a pair of half-frame specs, something that will make me look smart, like those u see young businessman in suits wear. Priorities are nice frames and cheap prices. (I also want to find out more about the lenses e.g. Crizal, Hoya, Carl Zeiss. All along, I just tell my regular optician I want the extra thin lens with coating to prevent scratches.)

Brands I'm looking at: Agnes B, Braun Buffel, Oakley, BOSS, Ma-ji Masatomo etc.

ma-ji masatomo MJ1-910 like very fragile is the lens easily break off?

Won't la. If the nylon string attached is nice and tight shouldn't be a problem. For half-rim spectacles, I would normally recommend getting airwear lens with it as there is a 1 year warranty if the lens chip off or crack.

I'm quite confused about the types of lens/brands, e.g. Crizal, Carl Zeiss, Varilux by Essilor, Hoya e.g. Is there a site that explains the differences?

crizal and varilux is by essilor. carl zeiss is by itself a company which produces their own brand of lenses. For example they have teflon coating for their lenses whereas essilor have crizal. Varilux is a brand of lenses under essilor, mainly their progressive lenses. Hoya is another company which have lenses with coating they call VP coat, sft coat etc.

These are all very confusing to layman. What's most important is the lens and coating is good and lasting. Hoya lens has very good coating. However, many people only talk about crizal because of the numerous advertising and promotion by essilor, which lead to greater consumer awareness and brain washing by the company. :s8:

has anyone bought uncut lens online and brought it to the optician to fit into the frame? How much would that service cost?

THis is not recommended. If the lens break or got damage during processing, the optical shop will not be responsible. Sometimes the optical shop will also not accept your own lens as they do not want to take the risk of damaging your lens.

If the optical shop decide to cut the lens for you, the cost would probably be about $20 and above depending on the type of frame you choose.

recently bought a specs from Zenni Optical online and it came by registered mail 7 days later. the photochromic lenses is better than ILT's SunActive photochromic lenses which I got from SPEX outlet.

one of the Sunactive lenses first came with scratches underneath the coatings, and so I got the SPEX shop to change it for me when I went to collect it. After a few weeks, I collected it but after went home, discovered that one len got spiderweb pattern in the a big patch (1cm X 0.5cm) in the coating...maybe they applied more coats to cover/smudge the scratches... could be bad techniques in making the lenses / applying the coatings

really bad...Spex and ILT Sunactive. Never going to buy from them again. online is cheaper and better than the budget Spex store

No. they did not apply more coat to cover or smudge the so called "scratches. doing so would incur more cost for the shop. the spiderweb is simply due to poor/defective coating.

Thanks. Mind if you go into a bit more detail on the description and differences among them? Or point me to a website that goes into detail? Still quite confused. What about the material of the lens, high index, anti-reflective, scratch resistance, etc?

Mr Magoo Glasses ?

Hi guys,

I just bought an Oakley Frogskin - Acid Rain Black and was thinking of making it into normal glasses with short-sight prescriptive lenses.

Power Index for both eyes = 800. No astig though.

I had asked at a shop @ Simei for high index, 1.67, with multicoat. The shop assistant advised me that even with high index, the lenses are gonna look quite thick cause of the way the lenses will be designed and cause of my cock eye power index.. :p

Anyone have any experience in this or have heard of this issue before ?

Was quoted $150 for making the lenses. Is this the reasonable price ?

Haven't made specs since ages ago. Been wearing contacts since I can remember. Just thought that it'd be good to make specs just in case. But if the end result just gonna make me look like Mr Magoo, might as well I save my shades and get a normal frame.

Would appreciate any comments and suggestions. Thanks in advance guys.

The optician is probably right with your degree on the 1.67. If you're not using them for sports activities, make them in glass, they'll be thinner. No UV protection though, and they will be heavier. But not by much.

To some extend, you're gonna look like Mr Magoo, so invest in thinner lenses to avoid the obvious of looking like him. Your frame doesn't come cheap, and you bought them for the brand and looks, so might as well go all the way (as far as you can) with the lenses. Why skim now? Finish it, don't half-f**k. :D

Hello there! All I have to say is that all these 'branded' lens all have similar coating consisting of scratch, smudge, water, dust resistance and also anti-reflective. The difference is in their coating. Tho they have the same properties, the technology used is different.

Material wise, most comes in plastic, of course you can get glass lens with the coating as well.

High index is 1.6. The index of the lens varies from brands. The higher the index, the thinner the lens gets and also the more expensive it is.

If you still can't decide, Zeiss lens are from germany, Essilor lens are from france, Hoya lens are from japan. Just pick one that is within your budget.
