Both Japanese made.. high quality. 999.9 focused on comfort. style wise not very stunning.

Japonisim focused on style.. comfort not as good as 999.9.

Such brands only can find in town area or big big mega stores. if u have the chance, go try a few pieces.

Which aspects of "focus on comfort" are you referring to? The hinge part? Balance?

If silhouette is focused on the weight, does it mean not so much on the comfort?

LOL? ok... i think its better get authencity card to see how true is it.

seriously, i will test my hoya sft lens with my own scratch-test. Don use metal. Use gentler tools like your fingernail or pen & try. If it cant even pass the fingernail test then you know the result.

how can you tell whether the nylon of a half-rim frame is tied securely to the lenses or not?

Does it mean that if the nylon doesnt sit in completely into the lens groove, it is loosely-tied? Or just means that the groove is not cut deep enuf for the nylon to sit in but not necessarily mean its not tightly secured?

do you guys think it is too extravagant to be buying a new pair of spec every 6 months (that is the turn-around rate of new collection for some brands) & spending ard $800 each time?

Seannie, IMO, I think you are the best person to reply to this question. Only you know your current financial situation.

Hi all,

thinking of changing my specs (like finally after 5 years plus of using oakley's square wire 2.0) and would like to ask for recommendations for a frame that is not oakley (if possible) but similar in the sense it doesn't have ear "hooks" (somehow I never liked it).

I'm not so picky about branded frames as long as it looks decent enough to be worn into the office. Budget is about $350 for the frames.

Thanks :)

URBAND frames definitely meet all your requirements and might even be better than oakley because it is even lighter & mre comfy. This is thru my own experience which I just found out recently.

For more info go to their website Urband: designer of light and comfortable contemporary eyeglasses or nanyang optical's website Nanyang Optical

Cheapest 999.9 i saw is around $500+.

Cheapest Japonisim also around $500+

Average is $700+ and $800+ respectively.

700+ is a bit too expensive unless the frame is v v good.

Can you take a pic of 999.9 / japonisim and post it here for all to take a look first?

If it looks ok, then can go take a real look at capitol optical.

Hi Guys,

lens decision

I was helping my bro to shop for his spectacles. Having no idea about choosing lens, shop, frames etc, I read/skimmed through the last 50 pages of this thread. Armed w some knowledge I went to a few shops & found that
1. as expected, neighbourhood shops, has ltd variety of frames & they only offer 1 or 2 lens brand. The prices are surprising not that great (in terms of discount quoted from the sticker price or from their catalogue folder)
2. some big chains have big brands which have big prices, so there is ltd mid-range specs. I sense higher sticker prices.
3. shops like those in Queensway suit my needs but some carry ltd lens brand & they like to push certain brands.... Pricing (I think) depends on whether we click with the sales person.

My bro needs progressive; 1.6. Found a shop w wide variety of lens & frames. I didnt want Essilor Crizal, so next best price was Seiko. Hoya costs a little more which is good. I was surprised that Tokai cost much more & Zeiss is the most ex.

I settled for Hoya, Trueform w SFT which turns out to be a good decision. Later I found this link which I think will benefit readers if they want to compare lens brands:
http://www.luzerneoptical.com/pdf/hoya-lens-ar-comparison-guide.pdf
(It takes awhile to download)

:)

Since u like oakley design, likely u will like Tag, but Tag is $600+ for the frame. Chances U might be able to find some design from IC Berlin or byWP which u may like, and the newer range of these frames are all without ear hooks.

One "oakley lookalike" IC Berlin

I started with oakley, like the "earhookless" feeling. Went to Tag next. After 3 pairs of oakley and 2 pairs of Tags, I started missing the "earhook". Luckily managed to find one byWP with earhook as most of them are "hookless".

Both IC Berlin and byWP frames should start around $300+.

Those who find the download in the link below can get a faster download from here: hoya-lens-ar-comparison-guide.pdf

Most of the time you will find articles saying these are good quality brands etc which can be rather vague.

What I like in this article is the "objective" comparison of quality between the lenses that are available on the mkt.

With this, price will be the deciding factor, eg if I want to choose betw a particular Zeiss model & a comparable class of Hoya.
