oh... isnt the groove to be cut supposed to be standard depth? do you mean that different nylon threads are being used, thus the there are different thickness of the nylon, that is why the depth of grooves varies? Otherwise, if the same kind of nylon being used for all the frames, aren't the depth in the groove the same? Y shd machine set some to be deeper & some to be shallow?

Ofcos cosmetically it isnt really that much of a concern. im just afraid the nylon will shift out.

Most of the frames i saw the nylon usually do not flush with the edge, but always a little protruding out. I suppose it's not that easy for the lens to fall off from the nylon? i tried pulling the nylon out from the lens but it didnt budge. But if i pull the frame part, it moved a little.

No , the groove is not standard depth. nylon string also got thick and thin but most i believe are of certain size. The reason why there are different depth is because of different manufactures. but i believe most of are certain depth.

if you are free, go to the optical shops and look at the rimlon frames. you will notice the nylon will sit flush with the edges of the lens.

i think you should not worry yourself with all the technicalities as long as the frames look nice and sit comfortably on your face and you can see clearly withou any problems. :)

Thanks cow, war and dark.
I don't buy specs frequently so its pretty new to me. I'm quite a fussy guy when it comes to purchasing new stuff, its actually quite hard to accept the display glasses.

Everytime i ask for the display lens to be removed (to eliminate the reflection/glare) they manhandle the glasses. When I ask for a new pair, its always the same reason. Some even said they only ordered 1 pair, new model, just came in, when I've seen that model (Raybans) a year back or two.

I agree they should not manhandle the spectacle frame. even if they want to do it, they should do it out of your view. This is all about sales presentation.

Nowadays many people like to ask for "new pair". But i think consumers need to understand that optical shops are not electronics store , or some other kind of store where they give you a "new piece" from behind the store. Most of the time optical store don't carry 2 or three of each . also, unless you see some defect on the frame that they are going to give it to you, then there is no reason to request for a "new pair".

The so called advertisement banner / poster you see at the shop is nothing compared to print adverts on bill board, bus, etc. Look at how aggressive Essilor is in their marketing, every night they bombard you with TV advertisement. you know how much that cost compared to those ic berlin "advertisement" ?

Tag hauer is a watch brand and they use the brand and put it on spectacles. They are not spectacle makers like ic berlin. as for ic berlin, if you don't believe it's hand made, you can always drop by their factory if you happen to be in germany. I am not sure if you can do the same for Tag hauer or oakley .

how do you define poor quality and so so workmanship ? what do you compared it with ? if it cost $300 rather than 500+ for ic berlin, would you consider it as "good quality" then ?

First of all what i saw was not a banner/poster. It was a video from a screen mounted on the wall of optical shop.

quality is not abt price, its abt wat u see as it is, and not what the advert claimed it to be. ofcos $300 i will considered as good quality if it is indeed true quality. If a frame has a price tag like $500 then all the more it shd hav qualities that shd be at least equal to or on par with those of lower price, notwithstanding branding or advert costs. As i have explained in earlier posts, icberlin's hinges just arent that solid enough. To clarify, I believed icberlin are hand-made but i have doubts on the workmanship of those "hands" that made them. Similary to tahgheuer. I have made 3 pairs of tagheuer & i found same problems esp on the last 2 pairs which are most likely made between 2010-2011. The first pair which was like 3 yrs back looks to be better.

Anyway i shall not comment too much on icberlin. I just share my views in the hope that those who are looking for the best frame like i do may wish to take it as a reference and not regret their choices. Just like me, i regret many of my purchases becos not many ple could have advised me otherwise or provide some in-depth insights.

I rather depend on technology to make my world a better place to be. Good service is becoming harder & harder to get by to depend on. Good service shd be something more of an extra perk rather than an expectation.

+1. The newer Tag, the quality seems to be lacking with the premium Tag is charging.

I beg to differ on this: Good service shd be something more of an extra perk rather than an expectation

When I visit an optical shop - providing good service should be an expectation. Customers pay for the lens, frame and quality service. Similar, when I step into a watch shop to buy a Rolex watch, I would expect good service from the Sales person too.

Hi! Would like to seek some comments from the experts here on a set of eye test result.

LogMAR:
R: +0.08
L: +0.12

Computed Snellen:
R: 6/06p
L: 6/7.5p

May I know what does the above result mean? Good?

TIA for replies. :)

Rolex is a high end product. Ofcos the sales staff will try their best service to close the deal with you if they see you as a prospective buyer.

Anyway watch is a lot different from spectacles. If i want to buy an expensive watch, I would also expect good service else i will get sour feeling after buying from a sour face.

Spectacles go thru a process, like getting the correct prescription data sent over to the lab, the lab technician grinding, edging, mounting your lens etc. So its mre important that the ple handled yur specs carefully and do a good job. I think this factors outweigh the "service" that you are going to get.

Just like if a food stall sells the tastiest food in singapore but the seller gives you a black face or when you are sick needs a surgery and there is this best doctor in singapore who also has an attitude but who is really good in his surgery.

Are you going to give these a miss too?

I doubt a doctor with excellent surgery skills but is awful in personal relation skills and has a lousy attitude can become well known.

If you are in the service industry, providing good service is essential regardless of the product - whether it is a high end product or mid range product.

Hey guys, when you purchase a brand new pair of spectacles, do they hand you a brand new sealed set or the one that you tried on. And if you request for a new sealed set, do they offer it to you or would there be any additional charges or just a flat no?

Different company operates differently. Normally if customers were to request for new product, we will transfer stocks from HQ warehouse, order new piece from Agents or do 1 to 1 exchange with Agents.

Selling price should be same but some brands may need you to pay for special delivery charges.

Zeiss is vg but I find Zeiss starting prices rather steep compared to other brands from the same quality class.

eg my bro did a Hoya progressive, 1.6, Trueform Summit CD (which is a midreange freeform lens) and he was so darn pleased with the quality. If he were to select a similar class from Zeiss, ie the Gradal range, he would have to pay up to a couple hundred more! Similarly Nikon & Tokai also costs far more than Hoya. I didnt enquire on Essilor so I cant comment.

Well, i think if u link it with workmanship cost?

Hoya major factory @ Thailand.

Zeiss have lots of factories across Europe.

All Carl Zeiss lenses comes with a laser engraved logo.

Depends on your astig angle, it may be partially or fully cut off.

U can ask your Optician for a sample of their logo(cuz i cant find online to show u) its like a Square with 2 diagonal lines forming like a Z shape.
