Hi guys
Am planning to get a decent-looking specs for work usage. Thin metal or plastic frame preferred. Any recommendations? Went to few optic shops but couldn't find the stuff I want. Budget around 300 for frame.

My tag heuer 3101 Rimless has arrived but the sides is grey..would red sides be a better choice. I am a lady, hope this Rimless frame would suit me cos I m going to invest in a photofusion lens that would cost more than 1k..any comments?

Any one using pescara lens here?

Seems quite cool and light frames, with spring hinges.

Was quoted $280 for crizal ossa lens 1.56.

Is it pricey?

Thanks for your views. I thought tag heuer is v comfy...though might look a bit casual. But I felt for frequent use - comfortable is more important than form factor.

You got the idea right. When choosing spectacles, first criteria must be comfort, then followed by style then colour. If it is not comfy it defeats the purpose of a spectacle as a vision aid. Most specs nowadays are designed with the style as the main consideration factor & totally neglects the functional aspects. I have been thru the processes of making many "unwearable" specs, all of which cant fit my facial or skull features at all. One major problem is the manufacturers' design of the nose arms, which are always inclined towards more angmoh features. Japanese designed frames comes closest to our features, at least their nosepad arms are designed to be situated closer & sits higher on our wider & flatter asian noses. And you also realised that most japanese frames are made of lightweight titanium & most models have curved temples that wrap our asian faces well.

The reason why you felt tagheuer is comfy is also becos of this curved temple aspect as well as the lightweight factor. But you got to have a higher & narrower nose bridge in order to feel more comfortable with their nosepads, else it will keep sliding down your nose after some time.

hi guys, have been reading through this thread as i am thinking of making a new pair of specs as my current pair is heavily scratched...

could i ask wats the difference between Tokia Modecinq lens and Carl Zeiss lens? I also read that nowadays glass lens are not very popular - arent the tokia modecinq and carl zeiss lenses made of glass? if i am particular about anti-scratching, i assume i should go for glass lens as opposed to plastic lens?

My degree is about 850 with astig of about 200 for each eye. What lens would you recommend and what is the approximate cost of the lens? Many thanks!

Glass is not popular nowadays because of their heaviness & the advancement in technology of plastic lenses and they are not as expensive as used to be. On the other hand, glass are getting costlier due to the lesser in demand & also less factories are making them.

With your degree of 850, you can still make glass if you like but i think it is too heavy & prtessurising on your nose if you wear all day. The only advantage of glass seems to be its clearer in vision & asethetic appearance looks thinner. Carl zeiss should be a good enough choice.

If you do not have a wide face, you can actually consider plastic lenses at least 1.67 else preferable go for 1.74 thinnest plastic lens though price is high.

Hi Seannie,
Thank you very much for sharing your valuable views. What are some of the Japanese brand you would recommend for comfortable wear? How about silhouette?

Hi Seannie,
Thank you very much for sharing your valuable views. What are some of the Japanese brand you would recommend for comfortable wear? How about silhouette?

silhouette is an european brand, selling point is that it is extremely light, according to my optician, by far it is still the lightest frame in the world at the moment, weighing in at abt less than 2 grams. Silhouette is popular with gals, maybe becos of the rimless look, so depends what you are looking for. But the fitting not right for me.

If you happen to pass by china square, you may like to try this shop which i discovered just opened recently less than a month:-

Spectacle Culture
3 Pickering Street, #01-47 Nankin Row

It is just opposite Hong Lim Complex. You can look for the optician/owner adelynn sim. I find that she provides rather endearing service and the place is classy & comfortable, targeted for working executives. They also carry silhouette frames, as well as some japanese brands, you got to try to know whether fits you or not. You do not need to worry becos she is not pushy. You can just feel free to take a look even without buying.

Seannie, wouldn't plastic lenses be more prone to scratches?

Seannie, tks for sharing! I need to get a frame I am comfortable in cos I will b investing on a pair of photofusion frame fit lens. It was highly recommended by optician instead of transitions... any comments on this?

Seannie, wouldn't plastic lenses be more prone to scratches?

yes, you are right in that plastic is more prone to scratches, but the crux of the problem is how careful you handle your specs. If anyhow place or throw your glasses around or put inside your pocket etc, even glass lenses will get scratches. I ever bought new glass lenses that are already with scratches when presented to me by the salesgal. She kept looking at the glass lenses & keep wiping with cloth, presumably thinking that those can be removed. When i got home & i only realised that they are scratched, it dawn on me that even glass can be scratched if you not careful.

But frankly speaking, plastic lenses also have anti-scatch coatings so actually they are still a better option, considering the comfort factor. If you wear specs all the time, you would want the weight of your specs to be minimised as much as possible, so everything counts, even the lenses add weight on your nose although some opticians tell you that plastic lenses dont count for alot of weight but they still do affect how comfy you feel throughout the day.

Even with plastic lenses, i can feel the difference in weight when im wearing a frame with smaller lens size compared to a frame with bigger lens size. I conclude that size of lenses play a part in the weight as well, and not just the lens material or frame itself. If you really like glass lenses, i recommend getting a very small frame with corresponding small lens size so that you dont feel it heavy. BUT you got to have a frame that is curved enough at the temples to fit the width of your head else the frame will keep digging into the sides. If you have a small head then no prob.
