A lot of time value retention is a fallacy. We don't take inflation into account. Just look at this graph. Price increase by 7k but real value only increase by few hundred only. Most important is not value retention, but appreciation retention. If you love ur watch for many years it's already worth it.

my point exactly! but somehow, the figures seems a bit dodgy.

but still, can you imagine what happens WITHOUT price increase to cover the inflation?!

prudent/wise/clarivoyant choice selection can reap a breakeven or even profitable return.

for those who'll say watches can't make money, that goes even more for investment instruments which can incur losses. and we can't even wear them on our wrists for enjoyment.

while i agree with your criteria that buying watches should be based on durability and what attracts us to it, i humbly differ when you say appreciation (or value retention in my own words) isn't (that) important.

after all we sink in thousands, if not tens of thousands in our hobby. shouldn't the least we do is to ensure we don't suffer unnecessary depreciation should i or any heir(s) chose to liquidate them, especially the more expensive pieces?

sometimes constraints can help re-focus our limited funds, for scarcity is a fact of life when wants are unlimited.

so perhaps another reason why i gravitate to my value retention philosophy in collecting, apart from my very modest watch budget, is perhaps to tame the sucker in me for the romance & charm of watches and my insatiable lust for all nice, well-made watches of integrity from value-for-money orients/citizens/seikos all the way through to the the lofty stratospheric reaches of watchdom and not get carried away with the HFTL, BBB frenzy.

for eg. had i not exercised a heavy dose of restraint, i would've ended up easily with a tudor black bay, tudor pelagos, orient pro saturation diver, seiko mm300, steinhart ocean titanium 500 and few other steinharts, a laco erbstuck, the full series of the doxa 300 professional/sharkhunter/searambler and quite a few others in the heat of the moment a while back.

impulse buying and value retention I see as different things,
logically(oxymoron I know) impulse buying should happen more to people when they buy watches with good value retention, after all they know they won't lose much even if they sell it away anytime.
Also repressing too much of watch enjoyment will get internal injuries one...

Does it charge the lume a lot faster?

Oh, haha, I won't buy a watch that I don't like just because it's a good deal though. Cos sometimes good deals will get burnt, even if you check and check and check, later will have problem that crop up... Plus there are problems that won't be obvious during a 10 minute check when dealing.
