IMHO, vintage is simply a term for something that would be generally regarded non-contemporary and of age. Technically everything current today will, if they still exist in 50 years, be considered vintage.

How desirable a vintage will be is a separate matter. Reasons contributing to the desirability of vintage Rolexes (as we know of them today) are quite extensively and well-documented on the internet. Many of those reasons may or may no longer apply to "modern" Rolexes. Only time will tell, if we live to that day to discover.

yeap, with that being said, say a 114060, it will look the same after the next 50 years (since there's nothing that can be done to upgrade the contemporary style or functionality on a cosmetic level, i would love to hear more if there is), how can a 2017 sub be different from a 2067 sub? the only difference being a 2017 with a more beat up case and 2067 a new shiny brand new case. as far as i know superluminova is made to be functionality far more superior than tritium and it's not supposed or made to age.

why is a vintage rolex (say submariner) so expensive and sought after is because of the years of evolution, every few years or even different country have different variation.
from the uber old big crown, to ones with crown guard, to chronometer and without chronometer, from normal date to quick set date. from radium to tritium, from plexiglass to sapphire, from 100m, to 200m, then 300m.
basically after many years, no 1 piece of those old rolexes look identical even thought coming from the same factory.
its not because its well documented that makes it sought after.
those rich, play modern till sian, up game till boring, what makes the game exciting again? why not look for old stuff? maybe the first few rolexes made by rolex? then it starts to build into a huge market that it is today.
everyone, if possible, will want a vintage (of any kind) in their collection (to proudly say, hey i am a god damn serious collector)
vintage rolex, omega, patek, the dirty dozen, etc.

50 years from now, i will be in my early 80s. hope i can live to that day, come back here post and say, told ya. LOL

In your opinion 50-60 years later the current watches will be considered vintage or not ah?

Vintage is just age definition.
Even LED or quartz watches can be vintages
How old before it becomes a vintage is the question...

The sub will continue to evolve in the next 50 years. Desirability will rise when each iteration ends production. I share the same sentiment as all in a day.

They can change the materials they use. Self healing metal and crystal? A watch that will not be affected by magnetism at all? Lume that glows without charge?

Just saying... don't ask me how!

Self healing metal and crystal does sound awesome, I would call the watch, 'Logan' :s12:

Knowing Rolex, it is really hard to say, they have quite a large budget for research and development, and they tend to be very secretive about their plans.

I do agree that my 114060 will probably look the same after 50 years, especially with the ceramic bezel, a material which have been used for many years in a variety of applications and not shown to age. However, I do hope that the dial will show signs of aging (hopefully from UV), to lightly contrast a shiny bezel. :s13:

You've probably seen these around too
MVMT-Watches-03.jpg

Just to give you an idea of how cheap they are:
http://www.hktdc.com/suppliers-prod...atch-Style-Leather-Strap/en/1X092TQV/3012045/

You can design and order something similar, minimum 300pcs from China for US$3.65 each. If your marketing as satki as DW and MVMT you can be a millionaire too. Production lead time only 15 days.

I dun doubt curent vintage watches will be more desirable in the future. Most of working ones might just end up in museums.

But i dun think rolex has reached the end of the road in term of product development. There are still a lot of potential for better material and better movement design.

Things that were impossible in the past wil become routine in the future. I was impressed with the perpetual calendar in the MB&F LM. The recent Ulysse Nardin InnoVision 2 with Direct Silicium Bonding and Grinder” automatic winding system is also pushing boundaries.

I m optimistic thay the best is yet to come :)

If we're all wearing apple watch or some Satki futuristic watch. Maybe.
But I think highly unlikely. Cause a 114060 will look like a 114060.
There won't be aging except for scratch up cases.
The new subs are too up there already.
Nothing more to improve over the next decade or 2.
Rolex has done a Satki job on that.
The 5513 will probably still around and worth millions and I feel it will.
2 reasons.
First, The numbers will get lesser.
2nd, Cause at that time, we will be very detached from the manual mechanical world and we need these to feel human again due to automation and who can afford? The rich and famous.
And the 5513 will still be called a century old vintage while the 114060 a typical old watch.

And it applies to all watches. Rolex is just a example
Not a hard core no rolex no talk fan boy.
