It's never easy to a gift that someone really likes. Best if you sound him out and check on what he wants before you buy.
Watch is like jewelry, very personal. He prefers a chronograph, dress watch, diver, pilot, smart watch?!
A sports Rolex will be best for value retention. That being said, it will still be very unlikely that it appreaciates in value.
Nothing wrong with wearing a Rolex (not full gold) when you are working in the civil service. Rolex is a common brand and can be seen as an entry level luxury watch.
i can attest to this. bought my dad a seiko monster. based on his wrist size, his previous watches, decided on that watch. a nice watch to me, n i would love to hv it in my collection. but.....he didnt like it. n i tink he didnt want to return it to me as it is a gift. he kept it but i nvr see him wear. feel like asking him to give it back n i replace with another watch
